Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Westerlies stick around for the extended forecast period, and that’s almost certainly good news to you if you’re reading this! During this period, the weather will be dynamic; fronts, lows, and shear will all be present leading to gusty conditions on the river.

Friday starts with gradients of .10 and .03 and westerlies in the teens all the way from Stevenson out to Arlington. Evidence of a Nevada low can be seen in the clouds blanketing most of the eastern Gorge. In the west, marine clouds are making a contribution. We’ll see the wind build to 22-25 from Swell to Rufus, or maybe to Arlington by midday. It holds through the evening. Expect gusty conditions. It appears the wind will drop to 11-14 in the western Gorge after 2pm, when showers are likely to kick off along the Cascade Crest. River flow is 212kcfs, river temp is 55F, and high temp forecast is 65F.

Saturday sees a warm front approaching form the NW offshore water. Add to that a wave of energy wrapping around the Nevada low and headed for the desert in the PM. Despite all this, it does appear that there’s a wind in time and location where a bout of stronger westerlies may be possible. The day starts with 16-19 from Stevenson to Mosier with 11-14 everywhere else. By late morning, the westerlies build to 21-24 form Stevenson to Avery and drop to 7-10 east of there. The eastern Gorge, under the influence of desert low pressure and Nevada’s low, could possibly turn easterly. It could also rain. Avoid. From Moiser to Rufus, you might find a period of gusty 25-28 in the afternoon. The western Gorge drops to 10-13. High temp forecast: 69F.

Clouds fill in across the land on Sunday, but that doesn’t stop the wind. Offshore high pressure combines with a low in the desert for a good chance of a big day. Westerlies start out the day plenty windy for playtime: 24-27 from Mosier to Rufus with 12-15 in the western Gorge and 13-16 at Arlington. The GFS calls for 30-40 from Rufus to Threemile in the afternoon with gusty 23-27 in the western Gorge and 28-32 in the far eastern Gorge (Boardman). Fingers crossed! High temp: 66F.

The extended forecast contains more fun. Don’t solidify you plans yet, because things could change. That said, 28-32 is possible in the eastern Gorge Monday and Tuesday. Never leave home without your smallest gear! Have a fun weekend on the river!
