Friday: a weekend of gusty westerlies… =)

Thank you for using this forecast. I offer it freely so you can have more fun and plan your life. It does take significant time and energy to produce. If you find yourself using it often, or if you feel your life is more awesome because of my work, please make a donation. You can…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Yesterday’s wind was right on target – up and down, unpredictable, etc. A weak cold front approaches the region today and hangs out for much of the weekend. That sets us up for several days of moderate and gusty westerlies. Any chances in the movement of this weather system could have impacts on the actual wind, meaning this forecast is by no means guaranteed!

For Friday, that cold front will be well off the coast. Deep marine clouds will stick around for much of the day in Portland. If we had any sort of offshore high pressure or deep inland heat low, this would be a recipe for a strong, steady day. With neither of those factors present, we’ll just have another day on the river. Dawn gradients were .08 and .06, a good start, and indicative of at least the Near East joining in. Early wind will be 17-21 from Viento to Swell with 13-16 everywhere else. With the clouds past Hood River, Mosier to Avery will climb to 20-23 by late morning. If those clouds burn back, Viento and Swell will join. Models don’t think Rufus will be windy but given the early gradients, I’ll override that – keep an eye on that stretch of river for 20-23 this afternoon. Roosevelt? Probably 13-16 early and 10-13 later. Stevenson: 13-16 all day.

That approaching weather system moves inland on Saturday and stalls over the Northwest. Offshore low pressure accompanies this, meaning gradients won’t get all that strong. It does appear that morning clouds will burn off faster, shifting the wind back from the Near East. Early wind: 15-28 from Viento to Mosier with 10-13 everywhere else. Afternoon: gusty 19-23 from Stevenson to The Dalles with 7-10 east of there.

A broad and encompassing area of low pressure takes over the offshore waters on Sunday. Less gradient results from this. Early wind will be just 5-8. By noon, the wind will pick up to 11-14 from Viento to the Dalles. As the front moves through, finally, mid-afternoon, westerlies pick up to gusty 18-21 form Swell to Rufus with 10-13 east and west of there. Models have been bouncing around about Monday. Current forecast is LTW early and 12-15 near Hood River in the afternoon.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Coast (north/central/south, wind N unless otherwise specified – swell forecast courtesy of National Weather Service). Friday: SW5/LTW/LTV, W swell 3′ at 9 seconds. Saturday: S10/SW10/LTS, W 3′ @ 8. Sunday: LTW/LTW/N10-15, SW 4′ @ 9. Jones Friday: LTW. Saturday: LTW. Sunday: 13-16. Sauvie’s Friday: 3-6. Saturday: 5-8. Sunday: 7-10.

Road and Mountain Biking

Approximately 0.2” of rain fell yesterday in Hood River, meaning there’s a darn good chance of a tack alert in Post and on other local trails. New report: chipseal is good to go between Mosier and Rowena crest! Riorden Hill Road will remain closed from the end of the pavement to Family Man weekdays through the beginning of September. That means associated trails are also closed weekdays for that time period (Family Man, Middle School, Float On). As for Kreps/SDS lands… they haven’t issued a closure yet!

All other trails are open. Apparently Boulder Lakes is quite overgrown. Whoopdee is closed for logging, but Ronnoc trail and the climb out are open. Red Hill Road is supposedly closed for logging. Ride at your own risk. If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new parking area. The cows are off Hospital Hill, which means your dog can come along.
