Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Quiet weather continues on Mt. Hood for the next few days. Models still don’t agree on what will happen Monday – could be dry, could be snowy, could be wet. Between now and then, we’ll have lots of sun. Looks like temps will fall below freezing under clear sky overnight, and that will transform the snowpack from slush to frozen granular. Grab your sunscreen and sharpen your edges for some fun carving conditions. Maybe we’ll even get corn snow – it sure was slushy up there today!

So, for the rest of Thursday, we’ll have partly cloudy sky. Clouds increase overnight, meaning the snowpack probably won’t freeze hard. Call it a light snap. Clouds Friday morning mostly burn off in the afternoon and stay gone overnight. The free air freezing level will be 3500′ all day and will fall to 2000′ or less near Mt. Hood overnight. Wind: SW 15-20 through Friday night and SW 5-10 after midnight.

Saturday starts mostly clear, adds some clouds and maybe some flurries (models call for up to 0.2” precip, or up to a couple inches of snow, but that would be the high end of the possibilities). The weather turns partly to mostly clear again by afternoon. The snow level will be 2000′ in the morning, and 3000′ in the afternoon and evening. Wind: SW 5-10 in the morning fades to light/variable in the afternoon and light easterly overnight. Sunday will be clear and sunny and dry. The free air freezing level will be 3000′ all day and will fall to 500-1000′ overnight. Wind: E 5 in the morning, SE 20 in the afternoon, and E 20 overnight. Let’s leave it there due to the uncertainty for Monday. TGIF. Enjoy!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! Still not much happening the next few days. There might be just enough easterlies on Sunday to get you out there. Other than that, offshore low pressure systems will keep things light. On Friday, we start with E 10 at Stevenson and light west wind at Iwash (Rooster) Rock. Afternoon wind turns onshore and picks up to W 5-10 from Stevenson to Hood River. River flow Thursday was 99-143kcfs, river temp is 38.12F, and high temp forecast is 48F. Saturday starts with E 10mph near Iwash and Stevenson. Iwash turns light/variable, and Stevenson holds. Clouds in the morning. Sun later. High temp: 47F. Sunday will be E 20-25 early at Iwash and E 35 in the afternoon. Stevenson starts at 15-20 and rises to 25 or so. High temp: 46F under mostly sunny sky.

Cycling

Regarding the trails in general: don’t ride in the mud. You’ll damage the trails. Don’t ride trails if it was below freezing the previous night and is above freezing when you want to ride. Ride gravel. Ride your trainer. Build trails. There are trail builders seeking extra hands on seven additional miles of trail on Whoopdee. Contact HRATS for more information. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
