Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The precipitation, somehow, managed to stay all snow on Mt. Hood yesterday and last night. Over 1” water value fell at base elevation for 5” of new snow. That there’s double the density of normal snow. Head up high on the mountain and the snow will be fluffier. We’ll see decreasing snowfall Friday, sunshine followed by clouds Saturday, and Sun all day Sunday. Next week looks warmer, but there is a chance of snow on Tuesday.

For Friday, the mountain will see morning snowfall and afternoon sunshine. The snow level will be 2000′ early and 3000′ in the afternoon, falling to 2000′ or maybe down to 0′ after midnight. About .2-.3” water value (WV) falls during the morning, for 2-3” new snow. Wind will be WSW 40 early, fading to WNW 15 in the afternoon and SW 10-15 overnight.

Saturday starts off sunny or partly cloudy. The afternoon looks cloudy with a chance of a few flurries or sprinkles. The free air freezing level will be somewhere between 0′ and 2000′ early and 6000′ in the afternoon and evening. Just a trace of precip will fall, probably as wet snowflakes. Wind will be SW 10-15 for the 24 hour period.

Sunday looks sunny. The free air freezing level will be 6000′ early, 8000′ in the afternoon, and 10,000′ after midnight. Wind will be SW 54-10 early and 10-15 in the afternoon and evening. We’ll see warm temps with a snow level of 10,000′ on Monday with just a trace of rain interspersed with partly cloudy sky starting around 11am and continuing through Tuesday morning. Wind will be S 15 early, S 20-25 in the afternoon, and SSW 15-20 after midnight.

Random Morning Thoughts

Many of us live with the idea that our thoughts, emotions, and bodies are separate entities. I would like to challenge that perception, if you happen to hold it. One of the things I’ve noticed is that my mind tends to spew forth lots of words when my body is tense.

Investigating this tension and allowing it to resolve pretty much always stops the flow of thoughts. This seems to relate to the fact that bodily tension often masks an underlying painful emotion. The emotion spews up related thoughts, stories and tales that involve that emotion. By ignoring the thoughts and getting at the emotion by feeling (or relaxing) the bodily tension, the whole cycle stops. Try it. It’s pretty cool. A quick trick, by the way, for relaxing a particular muscle is to tense it for 10-15 seconds and then release. You might be surprised by emotions that arise when you do the release part…

This does beg the question of what comes first in this cycle. My personal belief is that the origin is our nervous system’s desire to protect us from a painful, scary emotion. That might have worked well a long, long time ago, but it just keeps us stuck in suffering now. If we can undo that defense mechanism (and practicing with it will eventually undo it), we will suffer less. May you understand your anxiety and be freed from it. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time at Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely. Forecasting and counseling are both deeply meaningful and nourishing to me.

Gorge Wind Forecast

For Friday morning, we’ll have gusty, up-and-down west wind at 23-28 in select locations (Viento and Arlington, for example, and perhaps the Stevenson area too if the rain backs off). The wind will fade to 10-13 everywhere by 1pm. Saturday starts with E 20-25 at Rooster, picks up to E 30-35 midday, and backs off to E 15-20 in the afternoon. High temp Saturday will be 56 degrees. Sunday looks like E 30-35 all day, as does Monday. High temp will be 60 on Sunday. Water temp is 39 degrees.

Gorge Weather Forecast

I just did a GOLU, and it’s mostly cloudy. We’ll see showers this morning and partly cloudy to sunny sky this afternoon. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and low 50’s later. Moderate west wind. 99% chance of rainbows. Saturday looks partly cloudy with scattered sprinkles possible in the evening. Temps will be near freezing early and in the mid 50’s this afternoon. East wind. No rainbows. Sunday looks sunny. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and near 60 in the afternoon. East wind. No rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

Given that we had over 1/10” rain yesterday, Post will be too muddy to ride. Try a different location. Come see a freeride mountain bike movie and help the HRATS raise money to build a super-sweet pump track. In other news, the movie Ciclovida plays at Rockford Grange on the 16th. That one’s about Brazilians cycling around the country saving seeds. This will appeal to gardeners and cyclists. 5:30pm. Soup first.

Upcoming Events

It’s Friday, and the Kickstand Coffee run/walk/jog is at 7am. Do it, and you earn a free cup of coffee and a donut. This Saturday is the fundraiser for the HRATS pump track at the Elks club in the evening. It’s also The Dalles Mountain 60 gravel grinder ride. The annual Rockford Grange Seed Exchange is Saturday from 1-5pm. Meadows has a party at the Nordic Center on Sunday. The following Friday is the movie Ciclovida at the Rockford Grange.
