Mt. Hood Snow Forecast
How about some sunshine on the slopes? Let’s do this! It’s spring skiing all the way through Tuesday. Saturday will be sunny. The free air freezing level will be around 11,000′ for the 24 hour period. Temps rise to the mid 40’s at 5000′ in the afternoon. Wind will be SE 15 in the morning, S 5-10 in the afternoon, and W 10 overnight. Sunday will be sunny with the FAF at 11,000′. Temps max out in the upper 50’s. Wind: W 10 early becoming light and variable in the afternoon. Monday will be sunny with the freezing level around 11,000′. Wind: light and variable becoming SW 10-20 overnight.
Extended: Tuesday also looks sunny. A weak system may or may not move into the area on Tuesday evening, and we may see light snow Wednesday. Models do not handle the breakdown of these warm spells well. Suffice it to say that by next weekend, we’ll be back to cool, snowy weather for the extended period. So, if you like sun and spring skiing, get it now!

Gorge Wind Forecast
Hi friends! East wind escaped the confines of the Gorge today, spilled over the hills, and knocked down wind speeds on the river. Saturday looks a bit windier, but you’ll want to get it early. Lighter wind Sunday and Monday gives way to westerlies on Tuesday and Wednesday. Models are bouncing around a lot on how strong the wind will be. We’ll have to keep watching it.
But first, the sunny weekend. Saturday starts with 30-35 at Iwash (Rooster) Rock and 25 at Stevenson. Around noon, the wind drops to 15-20 at Stevenson and 20-25 at Iwash. Later: 15mph both places. With elevated wind turning to the south, the easterlies should be more confined to the river and thus stronger than on Friday. High temp: 68F. River flow Friday was 101-154kcfs, river temp is 44.06F. Sunday starts with 15 at Iwash and 10 at Stevenson. The wind fades during the day and turns calmish in the afternoon. High temp: 71F. Monday starts with 15 at both Iwash and Stevenson and fades to 5-10. High temp: 73F.
Looking at Tuesday and Wednesday… Tuesday’s focus will be west of The Dalles. The ECMWF ensemble gives us a 100% chance of gusts over 23mph west of The Dalles. Current GFS forecast is gusty 21-25 from Stevenson to The Dalles. The wind shifts eastward on Wednesday, probably. It really depends on how the cooldown progresses. Anyway, the ECMWF ensemble has a 100% chance of gusts over 23mph east of The Dalles with a 20-40% chance of gusts over 39mph. Why are we using gusts instead of averages? Because that model just works better. Also, there’s a lot of range in the prediction at this point, so percentages are more helpful. We’ll keep watching. Personally, I have my eyes on Tuesday at the Hatch. Fingers crossed.

At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Fridays at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class at Yoga Samadhi. On Saturday at 9am, there’s a by-donation outdoor group fitness on the 2rd floor deck about Ferment Brewing.

From HRATS: “Trailwork continues on Kleeway and we could use your help raking/shaping/and compacting the dirt.Are you able to join us next Saturday and Sunday (March 16th & 17th) from 9:30-1? Craig Spaeth will be the point of contact on site.Meet at Seven Streams Kiosk both mornings at 9:30 AM. We’ll have some tools available, but please bring rakes, shovels, gloves, water and snacks.”
Sisterwives and Kleeway in Post Canyon are currently closed for rebuilding. Regarding the trails in general: don’t ride in the mud. You’ll damage the trails. Don’t ride if it was below freezing the previous night and is above freezing (or sunny) when you go to ride; freeze-thaw trails are susceptible to permanent damage. Ride gravel. Ride your trainer. Build trails. There are trail builders seeking extra hands on seven additional miles of trail on Whoopdee. Contact HRATS for more information. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast
“Spring skiing” is an apt description of what you’ll find on Mt. Hood for the next five days or so. Plenty of sunshine, a freezing level around 10,000′, and clear sky overnight that allows the snow to snap (freeze) thanks to radiational cooling. After a few days of this (counting Thursday), the snow should transition to granular/corn. Wax for warm weather, and maybe carry some extra wax in your pocket.
Friday will be sunny all day. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 10,000′ all day with temps rising to the mid 40’s at 5000′. Wind: E 20 all day and all night. Saturday brings sunshine all day. The FAF will be between 10,000′ and 11,000′ all day. Wind: E 20 in the morning, SE 10 in the afternoon, and light/variable overnight. High temps max out in the upper 40’s at 5000′. Sunday looks sunny, warm (50F), and nearly calm. Ditto on Monday. Next chance for precip isn’t until next Thursday. After that, the weather turns cooler – ensembles are bringing back precipitation and holding the snow level below 5000′ (850mb temps less than 0C). It appears winter isn’t over yet! Gorge Wind Forecast
Easterlies should be strong enough for wind sports on Friday and Saturday, but you’ll want to get it early. Sunday and Monday both look lighter. Westerlies return on Tuesday, but the strength will be marginal. Some ensemble members like it stronger. Most call for not-quite-enough. The majority of the ensemble members are calling for “enough” west wind on Wednesday, possibly even mid-20’s near the Hatchery.
So. Friday: Iwash (Rooster) starts with 30-35, and Stevenson starts with 25. The wind rises to 30-35 at Stevenson and holds at Iwash through noon. After that, the wind drops to 20-25. It’s worth noting that the wind won’t be confined to the lower elevations; it’ll be windy in the hills too. That may result in the wind underperforming where we need it on the river. River flow Thursday was 99-153kcfs, river temp is 43.88F, and high temp forecast is 63F after a 35F start. Saturday starts with 30-35 at Iwash and 25-30 at Stevenson. Get on it. By 11am, both drop to 25 or so. Afternoon: 15-20 at Iwash and 15 at Stevenson. High temp: 68F. The currently forecast for Sunday is E 10-15 in the morning and W 7-10 in the afternoon. Monday: light/variable. Keep an eye on Tuesday and Wednesday for west wind opportunities. See you on the water!
