Gorge Wind Forecast
Hi friends! The wind over-performed at the Hatch yesterday despite some lingering low clouds. The swell is up, and so is the current. The elevator/escalator/moving walkway is zipping people along when they sit in the water. The current tends to peak in early June, so be prepared for lots of current for the next few weeks, at least. But you’re more interested in wind than current, aren’t you? I thought so! There’s plenty of wind in the forecast too!
For Sunday, much like yesterday, a weak trough will slide inland. This should keep the west side cool and allow desert heating to win the battle. That said, there are some differences from yesterday, and these will keep the wind less: first, there was a low in the desert enhancing gradients yesterday; second, cool air is farther inland today, and that’ll keep the thermal component down. All that said… Pressures started at 30.22/30.14/30.10 for gradients of 0.08 and 0.04. Wind was generally in the 16-19 range all the way from Stevenson to Rufus to start the day. The wind should hold in that range all morning everywhere and hold west of Mosier all day. Exception: we could see a few hours of 21-24 at the Hatch between 11am and 2pm ish. As we see a little heating out east, say, early afternoon, the Lyle to Rufus stretch picks up to 24-27. East of there to Arlington, expect 20-23. River flow over the last 24 hours was 199-250kcfs, river temp is 58.46F, and high temp forecast is 63F for Hood River and 65F for Arlington.
Monday morning brings a static setup – that should make for a steady start. A low approaching BC in the afternoon shifts the wind eastward and turns it gustier. Expect 18-21 dawn patrol from Viento to Swell or maybe Mosier with 11-14 at Stevenson and 11-14 east of Mosier to Arlington. The wind quickly builds to 22-25 from Stevenson to Mosier and adds Lyle, Rowena and Doug’s by early afternoon. This is when we’ll see the influence of that Canadian weather system – a brief spurt of 25-28 from Stevenson to Doug’s before the wind drops at Swell and focuses on the Lyle to Arlington zone at 25-28. High temp: 69F for Hood River and 73F for Arlington.
Extended: Models call for a rainy day on Tuesday with lesser wind for most of the day. That said, flow will still be onshore. It’s tricky to be precise or accurate from this far out given the pattern – ensembles are all over the place. We should see teens in the west and a short burst of mid 20’s out east as the system swings through. Ensembles have Wednesday pegged as the windiest day of the week. We’ll keep an eye on that as we get closer. Let’s leave it there for now. Have a great day on the river!

Cascadia Cup mountain bike race in Post Canyon 5/18 and 5/19. There’s a work party for the new hike/horse/run trail in Post. Meet 5/25 at 9am at Family Man Staging Area. There’s a plant sale and garden fair with music and vendors at Rockford Grange on 5/19 starting at 2pm. The Cascadia Dirt Cup is in Post Canyon June 1-2. There’s a weekly social for Wind Johnnies (The Gorge Wind Social) at Ferment Brewing every 3rd Monday this summer. The first is Monday, May 20th at 5:30pm.
The Columbia Gorge Junior Kayak Club offers free roll sessions (gear provided) for kids at the Hood River Pool every other Tuesday from 5:30 to 7pm. Visit their website for more deets: https://www.columbiagorgejuniorkayakclub.org/. Amayah’s offers a free meal every First Thursday from 1pm to 4pm. Regular weekly events:. NK Studio’s by-donation Tuesday morning yoga class is back. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. The Tri Club is done for the season. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Fridays at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class at Yoga Samadhi. On Saturday at 9am, there’s a by-donation outdoor group fitness on the 2rd floor deck about Ferment Brewing.
Cycling
Cascadia Dirt Cup is May 18/19 in Post. Avoid. Post, Whoopdee, Hospital Hill, Syncline, Columbia Hills, and Nestor are open. Cows are out on Hospital Hill. NO DOGS. That means you, all of you, even your dog that’s [insert adjective]. No dogs. Do not risk access for everyone. No parking at the corral. Whoopdee flowers are in full bloom. Hospital Hill and Syncline have ticks, oaks, and flowers. Columbia Hills is full of flowers and open to your bike. Definitely got a Tack Alert going on out there right now – lots of good dirt.
