Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! Looks like a nice long stretch of west wind on the way. If you’re already thinking about the weekend, go ahead and make plans to join us. Thanks to the heat low settling in the desert, the wind will be waiting for you. Looking out into next week, we have some variation in the placement of the heat low which impacts the potential for wind. We’ll talk more in a bit.

For Wednesday, pressures start at 30.19/30.13/30.16 for W 0.06 and E 0.03. Dawn Patrol westerlies will be 15-18 from Viento to Hood River. Jump on it. The wind will fade to 10-13 or less midday and hold through the afternoon. Working? Don’t worry – the executive session is here for you. Expect 16-19 from Stevenson to Hood River with 12-15 at Mosier after 5pm. River flow over the last 24 hours was 160-262kcfs, river temp is 58.82F, and high temp forecast is 76F.

Desert heat comes to the rescue again on Thursday. Dawn patrol will be right on the edge of “enough” – perhaps 12-15 from Viento to Hood River. Desert heating outpaces the metro area during the day. By early afternoon, you’ll find 19-22 from Stevenson to Mosier with 12-15 from Lyle to Doug’s. The wind builds from there: 22-25 from Stevenson to Doug’s by quittin’ time (5pm) and 22-25 from Stevenson to Rufus for the Executive Session (after 5pm). High temp: 84F under mostly clear sky.

Make plans to be on the river Friday evening. You won’t want to do anything else outside – it’ll be 90 degrees and unreasonably muggy. The day starts with a brief Dawn Patrol of 19-22 from Viento to Swell. By the time most of us are out of bed, the wind will be down to 10mph or less. You’ll have to wait for that executive session – models suggest the wind will be calm most of the day and won’t start to build until mid-afternoon. Executive session (after 5pm): 17-20 from Stevenson to The Dalles.

Extended: Models have been bouncing around on the Saturday forecast. This is due to 1) a system swinging through and 2) the placement of the ridge causing the heat. Cluster models say that ridge will be east of the Cascades for the weekend. That translates to cooler air in the west and hotter air in the east, and that translates to westerlies. Saturday could be anything from low-mid 20’s to nuking, but that weather system swinging through could impact wind quality. Sunday has potential to be very windy. Beyond that, clusters are unclear about the ridge placement and thus unclear about the wind, at least for the first half of next week. They seem to agree that the ridge will shift east for the second half of next week. That would almost certainly result in strong westerlies. Have fun out there!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! That was some day on the river yesterday! If you weren’t there (and there were very few people there), you’ll have plenty more opportunities to get some wind in the next week. You might even have a chance today if you’re not picky about conditions. Wednesday is a rest day, and then the wind returns and sticks around for a while thanks to heat in the desert and cooler air in the west. The exact details aren’t yet clear yet, but the general picture looks promising!

Tuesday’s pretty clear, or at least the forecast is. The sky will remain cloudy in the corridor and turn partly cloudy out east later. We’ll be stuck under a stationary system draped over the PNW. The day starts calm. Early afternoon sees the west wind rise to gusty 13-16 (with drizzle possible) from Stevenson to Swell. Between Hood River and Doug’s, the wind is likely to stay calm or less than 10mph. Out east, from Maryhill to Arlington, westerlies rise to gusty 18-22. River flow over the last 24 hours was 160-198kcfs (191-198 at Rufus), river temp is 58.64F, and today’s high will be 63F.

Wednesday looks pleasant, if not very windy. The day starts clam and partly cloudy. Sun breaks out all the way from the metro area to the desert, and temps pretty much equalize across the Cascades. After 2pm, the desert heats up just enough, and offshore high pressure will be just strong enough, for westerlies at 11-14 from Stevenson to Hood River. Farther east: calm or nearly so. High temp: 76F.

Desert heating takes off on Thursday, and this allows westerlies to return. Keep an eye on the Executive Session (after 5pm) for the strongest wind. Daytime won’t be too shabby. We start with 11-14 from Stevenson to Swell with 5-10 to Mosier and calm wind to the east. The wind slowly builds to 15-18 from Stevenson to Hood River by early afternoon. The wind keeps building. It maxes out at 21-24 from Stevenson to Doug’s after 5pm. High temp: 87F. Yeah, you’ll want to be in the river.

Extended: A similar setup is in the cards on Friday. On Saturday, a weak system swings through, offshore high pressure builds behind it, and the desert gets downright hot. Synoptic-scale (regional scale) support is provided by a neat heat low in southern Idaho. Watch for a big dawn patrol at the Hatch. Models are about 60-70% in on a big morning. Models also suggest the incoming (very weak) system will nudge the strongest wind to the east in the afternoon. It’s worth noting that about 2/3 of the Euro ensemble members drag in elevated moisture and give us a chance at thunderstorms. Get on it early for the best results, just in case. Sunday: moderately strong westerlies. Model spread increases on Monday for less clarity. Likely scenario: continued westerlies of some sort. Enjoy!
