Gorge Wind Forecast
Hi friends! Hopefully you weren’t seeking two days of rest, because there’s no longer two days of rest on the schedule. We’ll have wind through Saturday with the exception of Wednesday. Even Wednesday carries a chance for just enough wind late in the day to get some of you on the water. Before I forget… the railroad crossing at Arlington is closed today and tomorrow. You will not be able to drive your car out to the point. How do I know this? Because someone sent me a photo of the sign saying so! So, instead of Arlington, try Roosevelt or Threemile.
You might have just guessed the eastern Gorge is in the cards today. It is! The day starts with westerlies in the teens (15-18) from Viento to Hood River. Gradients at 6am were 30.03/29.94/29.87 for gradients of 0.09 and 0.07. Incoming today: a weak frontal system to our area and a low into BC with high pressure building in behind it off the coast.. By mid to late morning, westerlies build to gusty 25-28 from Stevenson to Doug’s with 27-30 out east. We then see a jump to 30-35 from Mosier to Rufus. At this point, clouds will push in to the western Gorge and make the section from Stevenson to Hood River questionable. East of The Dalles this afternoon, westerlies build to 29-33 from Avery to Boardman and hold through 5pm before dropping to the mid 20s. Models suggest that the Stevenson to Doug’s stretch will fall to 14-17 post-frontal. Incoming low clouds are the indicator of the upcoming collapse in the wind. River flow over the last 24 hours was 177-301kcfs (200-294kcfs at Rufus), river temp is 60.80F, and high temp forecast is 74F for Hood River and 88F for Pasco.
High pressure builds in strong and fast on Wednesday. There may be lingering dawn patrol westerlies at 10-13, but the wind will turn calm before this forecast is even out. It stays calm all day. Late in the day, thanks to just enough thermal support, westerlies rise to 12-15 or a touch more from Stevenson to Hood River. High temp: 76F. High pressure lingers Thursday morning, but it shifts east and away in the afternoon. This allows desert heating to outpace the metro area. Add in cool onshore flow from an approaching trough, and we have a recipe for evening fun. Cross your fingers that the timing holds. If it does, we’ll have low 20s from Stevenson to The Dalles early afternoon with mid to upper 20s form Stevenson to Rufus in the evening. High temp: 81F.
Wednesday sees ridging build in. After a 10mph start from Stevenson to Hood River, the wind turns calm or nearly so. Evening wind, if we get lucky, rises to 14-17 from Stevenson to Hood River. High temp: 75F for Hood River.
Extended: the trough I mentioned above drags much cooler air into the Pacific Northwest for the Friday-Sunday period. This shifts the strongest, steadiest, sunniest wind to the east. Ensembles point to moderately strong (mid 20s or a touch more) eastern Gorge wind for Friday and Saturday. The wind will be less on Sunday unless there’s a dramatic change in the forecasts. Beyond Sunday, significant uncertainty enters the picture. Have fun on the river today!

North/Central/South coast, waves (swell forecast provided by NWS). Wind forecast for the afternoon (unless it’s a storm on the coast, in which case that’s peak wind during the day). Wind direction N (coast/Sauvie Island) and W (Jones) unless otherwise noted. Tuesday: 10-15/10-15/30-35, W swell 6′ at 12 seconds and SW 2′ @ 14 seconds. Wednesday: 20-25/25/30-35+, W 7′ @ 10 and SW 2′ @ 17. Thursday: 20-25/15-20/25-30, W 4′ @ 10 and SW 2′ @ 16.

Mostly clear sky this morning adds low clouds and turns sunny again later. Temps start in the mid 60s and rise to the mid 70s. Strong westerlies. No rainbows. Wednesday will be partly cloudy then clear. Temps start in the mid 40s and rise to the low 80s. Very light west wind turns calm midday and returns in the evening. No rainbows. Thursday will be partly high cloudy. Temps start in the upper 40s and rise to the low 80s. Calm wind early. Moderate to strong westerlies later. No rainbows.

There’s a weekly social for Wind Johnnies (The Gorge Wind Social) at Ferment Brewing every 3rd Monday this summer. On June 25th, Brave Endeavors hosts a pride MTB ride at Post Canyon at 5:30pm. June 30th is Vortex #3, a paddling race.
The Columbia Gorge Junior Kayak Club offers free roll sessions (gear provided) for kids at the Hood River Pool every other Tuesday from 5:30 to 7pm. NK Studio’s by-donation Tuesday morning yoga class is back. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon.

Post, Whoopdee, Hospital Hill, Syncline, Columbia Hills, and Nestor are open. Eightmile, Knebal, Bottle Prairie, Surveyor’s, Dog River, Sueprconnector, and Cook Meadows are open. Fifteenmile is clear of snow but has not been cleared of downed trees. Lewis River is open. Lower Falls Creek is open, but the area above Horse Camp is not. Cows are out on Hospital Hill. NO DOGS. That means you, all of you, even your dog that’s [insert adjective]. No dogs. Do not risk access for everyone. No parking at the corral.
