Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! Three decent days are on tap. Today and tomorrow look like the strongest of the three. Tuesday’s a bit up in the air. Beyond that, we’ll probably see a few days of lighter wind as hotter weather returns to the region. Thinking about where to go? Both Mosier and Roosevelt are under Level 2 evac orders due to wildfire. Please stay away and let the fire crews do their thing.

Is this feeling helpful? If so, go ahead and make a contribution using Paypal to support it. Send $19.99 or more, and I’ll send the forecast to your inbox for a year.

Today’s Saturday, and the setup looks decent. Early pressures were 29.91/29.82/29.82 for a gradient of 0.09 from PDX to DLS. Out east: flat. Scattered marine clouds were present west of Hood River and in Portland. Not much, mind you, but better than nothing at all. Westerlies start at 17-20 from Viento to Hood River and Mosier with speeds generally around 10-13 at Stevenson, Rowena, and near Rufus. Farther east: calm and probably smoky. The wind rises to 22-25 from Viento to Mosier mid-morning with 18-21 at Stevenson and 14-17 from Lyle to Avery. Wait until the afternoon, and you’ll find 20-23 at Stevenson, 22-25 near Swell (although it’ll likely drop mid-afternoon), 25-28 from Lyle to Rufus with 20-23 at Arlington. The west side, Stevenson to Mosier, drops to 20-23 in the afternoon as the metro area heats up. River flow over the last 24 hours was 96-173kcfs, river temp is 70.52F, and high temp forecast is 80F.

A weather system shifts south along the coast on Sunday. This won’t stop the wind, but it’ll likely increase its gustiness. We start with 17-20 from Viento to Arlington with 10-13 at cloudy Stevenson. Late morning wind rises to 18-21 form Viento to Mosier with 22-25 form Lyle to Arlington. Stevenson lags due to low clouds. Afternoon: 22-25 from Stevenson to Hood River with 24-27 from Lyle to Arlington. The evening session sees the wind drop to 16-19 in the west and 20-23 out east. High temp: 78F with increasing high clouds.

Writing the complete forecast takes me 1-2 hours a day. If it saves you time, gas money, or helps you plan your life, please consider contributing.

A strong, for this time of year anyway, weather system slides inland on Monday. Low clouds increase as the day goes on. Head east for better results. Early wind will be 10-13 from Stevenson to Mosier with 18-22 from Lyle to Arlington. Afternoon: 23-26 from Lyle to Arlington with 12-15 from Stevenson to Mosier. It might even rain west of Mosier in the evening! High temp: 76F with increasing clouds as the day progresses.

Extended: lingering clouds and a secondary system are possible on Tuesday. This leaves us with 15-18 or so. Lesser wind is forecast Wednesday and Thursday as high pressure builds inland. We can’t rule out low teens from Stevenson to Hood River both days, but we can’t yet rule them in. Beyond that, the weather turns generally warmer. Models hint at high pressure and a return to stronger wind next weekend, but that’s way to far out to be making plans! Have a great day today!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! Not much is happening wind-wise this morning. It’s not quite dead calm, but it’s close. Westerlies return this evening and stick around through the weekend and beyond. Models have Saturday as the windiest day of the next three. Temps hang out near 80 through Wednesday or so – perfect weather for playing in the river. Due to wildfire, SR 14 is closed east of Roosevelt, and the town of Roosevelt is under a level 2 evacuation order. Mosier is also under various levels of wildfire-related orders. Please do not recreate at Mosier or at Roosevelt. Today through Sunday is the Bridge of the Gods Kitefest and the Blowout.

Unless you’re doing a no-wind sport, you won’t be playing in the river until late today. Early pressures were 30.10/30.08/30.08, slightly onshore. Models hint that they’ll stay neutral at river level today with a chance of E 5mph or so until late afternoon. In the evening, desert heating finally outpaces the metro area. Offshore high pressure lends a hand. This sets us up for 16-19 from Stevenson to Mosier after 5pm with 12-15 from Lyle to Doug’s. River flow over the last 24 hours was 93-159kcfs, river temp is 70.34F, and high temp forecast is 84F.

Moderate offshore high pressure combines with a heat low in the desert for a stronger day on Saturday. Models even hint at a bit of marine clouds west of Hood River. That’d give the wind an extra nudge. As of right now, it looks like we’ll see 20-23 from Viento to Mosier early with 10-13 from Mosier to Arlington and also at (cloudy) Stevenson. Mid-morning wind rises to 23-26 from Stevenson to Mosier with 17-20 from Lyle to Rufus. In the afternoon, the stretch from Stevenson to Hood River drops to gusty 17-21 while Mosier-Rufus rises to 26-29. Arlington: 19-22. Strongest wind will be after 2pm. High temp: 80F for Hood River and 86F for Arlington.

Writing the complete forecast takes me 1-2 hours a day. If it saves you time, gas money, or helps you plan your life, please consider contributing.

Sunday is also forecast to kick off with a few marine clouds. A low approaching BC limits the influence of the NE Pacific High – this results in less wind, and gustier wind, than Saturday. Expect 19-22 from Viento to Mosier to start with 11-14 at Stevenson and east of Mosier to Arlington. We’ll see a period of 21-24 from Viento to Mosier in the morning before Viento-Hood River drops to 15-18 in the afternoon. Between Mosier and Arlington, afternoon westerlies rise to 24-27. Stevenson, as usual, lags behind, but eventually rises to 21-24 mid-morning.

Extended: westerlies in the mid 20s continue on Monday. Lesser wind is forecast on Tuesday and Wednesday. Beyond that, models indicate some sort of warming trend, but they’re unclear on the amplitude of the warming. They do indicate some sort of continued onshore (westerly) flow. We’ll leave it there for now. Have a great day!

Jones, Sauvie Island, Oregon Coast

North/Central/South coast, waves (swell forecast provided by NWS). Wind forecast for the afternoon (unless it’s a storm on the coast, in which case that’s peak wind during the day). Jones Friday: 20-23. Saturday: 17-20. Sunday: 10-13. Sauvie Island Friday: 15-18. Saturday: 10-13. Sunday: LTN.
