Gorge Wind Forecast
Hi friends! A few days of easterlies – strongest today – give way to several days of west wind starting Sunday. Instability complicates the picture Sunday into Monday. I’ll get out a forecast tomorrow, and then I’ll be on retreat through next Thursday (when it’ll be hot and not-windy again).

Thursday starts with pressures of 30.09/30.21/30.22 for easterly gradients of 0.12 and 0.01. Iwash (Rooster) Rock started unexpectedly strong with reading in the mid 30s. If models are correct, Iwash (Rooster) begins a slow fade mid-morning. Mid-afternoon sees 20mph there. Late afternoon: 15mph. Viento and Stevenson started at 15-18. We’ll see Stevenson rise to 20-23 and Viento to 17-20 this morning. They fade to 15mph or so in the afternoon with Viento fading faster than Stevenson. River flow over the last 24 hours was 82-147kcfs, river temp is 69.08F, and high temp forecast is 86F.
Another easterly day is in the cards on Friday, but it won’t be as strong. Iwash (Rooster) starts at 17-20, and Stevenson/Viento start at 14-17. Late morning or early afternoon sees Iwash (Rooster) turns light westerly, and Stevenson/Viento drop to 10mph. Models say the wind will turn calm everywhere along the river in the evening. High temp: 92F.

Saturday brings one last round of east wind. The day starts with 14-17 at Iwash (Rooster) and 17-20 at Stevenson. By late morning or early afternoon, Iwash (Rooster) turns light westerly, and Stevenson falls to 13-16 then 10-13 in the evening. Wind near Hood River and to the east will be calm or nearly so. High temp: 95F.

Extended. The heat low shifts inland sometime Sunday. A different low pressure system moves north from California and (potentially) destabilizes the atmosphere. Expect gusty 17-20 with near-100F temps in the afternoon. Westerlies will be strongest near Hood River for the first part of the day. In the afternoon, they’ll fill in to the Rowena stretch. Ensembles have Monday as the strongest day in the upcoming period: 30mph or so, likely all the way from Viento to Rufus, perhaps Arlington. Models keep Stevenson cloudy and less windy. Models also have quite a bit of instability around, and that could disrupt the wind. All that said, the deterministic GFS has Tuesday as the windiest day with 30-33. The Euro ensembles do not agree – they have a wide variety of outcomes for Tuesday, none of which are “nuking”. Let’s just say it’s likely to be windy Monday and Tuesday and leave it there for now. Westerlies probably stick around in some form on Wednesday as temps begin to build again. Peak heating looks to be at the end of next week, after which model uncertainty is way too big to make any guesses. I’m headed out on retreat tomorrow. There’s a weekly social for Wind Johnnies (The Gorge Wind Social) at Ferment Brewing every 3rd Monday this summer. There’s a free community paddle at Wylde Wind and Water every Saturday at 10am (gear provided, all ages). They also have a free community wingfoil orientation every Thursday at 5:30pm at the Hook (all ages, gear provided). Northwave and GoFoil sponsor wingfoil races on Tuesday evenings.
The Columbia Gorge Junior Kayak Club offers free roll sessions (gear provided) for kids at the Hood River Pool every other Tuesday from 5:30 to 7pm. Visit their website for more deets: https://www.columbiagorgejuniorkayakclub.org/. Amayah’s offers a free meal every First Thursday from 1pm to 4pm. Regular weekly events:. NK Studio’s by-donation Tuesday morning yoga class is back. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. Columbia Gorge Tri Club meets at Mayer State Park at 6pm Tuesdays. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Fridays at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class at Yoga Samadhi. On Saturday at 9am, there’s a by-donation outdoor group fitness on the 2rd floor deck about Ferment Brewing.
Cycling
All vehicles on HR County forest roads need a gallon of water and a shovel. Fire or fire danger closures: Whoopdee, Underwood, Hospital Hill, most of Post Canyon, Gorge 400, trails around Mt. Adams. Dog River is closed for logging and rerouting until mid-September. Open: 44 Road Trails, Ape Canyon, Lewis River, Falls Creek, Columbia Hills, Gunsight, Boulder Lakes, Siouxon, Sandy Ridge. Twin Tunnels reopened for a day or two, and then it closed again – I have photo evidence to prove this! Remember that E-bikes are not allowed on USFS non-moto trails. They are allowed on moto trails.
