Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! Today’s Saturday, and it’s a probably a wind sports rest day unless you head elsewhere. Take that rest day, because Sunday and Monday look super-duper windy. All of next week has potential for westerlies as well. Bonus: temps will be down into the low 80s next week!

Saturday opens up with pressures of 30.12/30.08/30.08 for gradients of 0.04 and 0.00. That’s enough for Viento to be in the teens. Models say that heat will equalize across the west side midday and turn the wind calm, or nearly so. In the evening, the desert outpaces the Gorge by about 5 degrees. That results in westerlies at 12-15 or so from Stevenson to Hood River. To the east: calm. River flow over the last 24 hours was 104-208kcfs, river temp is 70.88F, and high temp forecast is 100F.

We’ll start Sunday with onshore gradients and a weak system moving northward. That system could trigger some elevated thunderstorms, which could render the forecast completely unreliable, at least early in the day. If the storms don’t materialize… we should start with 20-23+ from Viento to Mosier. To the east: light or calm. That’ll be a good chance to check out the swap meet at Windance. By late morning, westerlies jump to 26-29 from Stevenson to Mosier (barring thunderstorms) with 20-23 at Rowena and 14-17 out near Rufus. The wind keeps building. Afternoon westerlies rise to 29-32 from Stevenson to Rufus with 26-29 at Arlington eventually Threemile. Boardman: 20-23. If you want the absolute strongest wind, aim for somewhere between Swell and Doug’s, but the far east (where meters read higher) won’t be too shabby. High temp: 88F for Hood River. 102F for Arlington. 107F for Pasco.

A deep marine layer fills the west side on Monday morning. It may make it all the way to The Dalles! Ginormous gradients kick off the day, and they keep building. Anywhere east of the low clouds starts with 30+. Under the low clouds: gusty 25-35. Afternoon westerlies build to 30-35+ from Stevenson all the way to Boardman. High temp: 81F for Hood River, 95F for Arlington, 101F for Boardman.

Extended: Tuesday looks lighter as a system dances around offshore. Call it low 20s for now. The deterministic GFS calls for mid 20s on Wednesday, and the ensembles are even more optimistic. Another mid 20s day is in the cards for Thursday. Generally speaking, westerlies are likely to continue into next weekend as seasonably normal weather (finally) sticks around. Rest up today, and I”ll see you on the water tomorrow!

Monday will be cloudy then clear. Temps start near 60 and rise to 80ish. Very strong westerlies. No rainbows.

Tonight, 7/19, is the Women of the Wind get together. 5pm at the Doug’s school space with kiter and winger pointers and on-water sesh at 5:30. There’s a weekly social for Wind Johnnies (The Gorge Wind Social) at Ferment Brewing every 3rd Monday this summer. There’s a free community paddle at Wylde Wind and Water every Saturday at 10am (gear provided, all ages). They also have a free community wingfoil orientation every Thursday at 5:30pm at the Hook (all ages, gear provided). Northwave and GoFoil sponsor wingfoil races on Tuesday evenings.

The Columbia Gorge Junior Kayak Club offers free roll sessions (gear provided) for kids at the Hood River Pool every other Tuesday from 5:30 to 7pm. Visit their website for more deets: https://www.columbiagorgejuniorkayakclub.org/. Amayah’s offers a free meal every First Thursday from 1pm to 4pm. Regular weekly events:. NK Studio’s by-donation Tuesday morning yoga class is back. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. Columbia Gorge Tri Club meets at Mayer State Park at 6pm Tuesdays. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Fridays at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class at Yoga Samadhi. On Saturday at 9am, there’s a by-donation outdoor group fitness on the 2rd floor deck about Ferment Brewing.

Cycling

Ape Canyon and Plains of Abraham are open per USFS website. Patchy snow and downed trees were there as of last report, 6/24. 44 Road trails are all open and clear, including upper 450 and Fifteenmile. As of 6/30, Gunsight is open. Boulder Lakes and other more remote trails are not bucked out yet. Remember that E-bikes are not allowed on USFS non-moto trails. They are allowed on moto trails.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! It’s another breezy day in the Gorge, where the global tech outage won’t stop the wind. Get it today, and plan for a rest tomorrow. Mother Nature put that rest day there so you’d be ready for a couple days of blasting west wind on Sunday and Monday. Monday has the potential to be the windiest day of the season, and Sunday’s wind will be nothing to thumb your nose at. Beyond Monday, westerlies of some sort generally persist, as do, finally, lower temps.

Friday starts with pressures of 30.16/30.07/30.03 for gradients of 0.09 and 0.04. We’ll have 19-22 from Viento to Mosier this morning. Stevenson joins at 19-22 late morning. In the afternoon, westerlies fill in at 19-22 from Stevenson to Doug’s with 14-17 from Avery to Rufus. To the east: lighter wind. River flow over the last 24 hours was 99-240kcsf (strongest in the evening), river temp is 70.52F, and high temp forecast is 89F.

Saturday’s going to be a hot one, and thanks to that, it’ll be less windy. We may start with a couple hours of 16-19mph dawn patrol between Viento and Swell with 13-16 at Hood River and perhaps Mosier. The wind quickly drops. With offshore high pressure in place to support onshore flow, westerlies might exceed the calm conditions predicted by the models midday. That said, it’ll probably be 10mph or less, and it’ll only be between Stevenson and Swell or Hood River. Evening wind, coupled with 100 degree temps, has the potential to rise to 13-16mph from Stevenson to Hood River after 5pm. Take it as a rest day if you can, because you’ll want to be focused and ready for Sunday and Monday.

A weak system moves inland to the north Sunday morning, strong high pressure builds offshore, and 110 degree heat in the desert knocks pressures way down out there. The result of all this is very strong wind in the afternoon as things stabilize; instability in the morning could result in under-performing conditions. All that said… the day starts with gusty 19-22 from Viento to Mosier with 10-13 at Stevenson and calm wind to the east. From then on, it’s a slow and steady build all day long. By late morning or early afternoon, we’ll have 28-31 from Stevenson to Doug’s. The wind fills in to Arlington (100+ degrees) in the afternoon at 28-31. Westerlies potentially rise to 31-35 from Lyle to Arlington and also have potential to rise above 30mph at Swell. Boardman and Threemile join at 26-30 in the evening. High temp: 88F for Hood River, 109F for Pasco. 20 degrees of temperature gradient!

Extended: a beast of a marine push on Monday morning sets us up for a ginormous day. Add in strong offshore high pressure, a heat low in the desert, and generally stable conditions for a nearly-perfect setup. 30mph right off the bat is likely all the way from Viento to Arlington. With clouds possible at least as far in as Hood River, conditions may be super-gusty in those cloudy locations. Afternoon sees clouds persist in the metro area while Hood River clears. Call it 30-40mph averages all the way from Stevenson to Boardman. On Tuesday, as cooler air slides inland and a low appears offshore, westerlies fall to 20mph or so. For the rest of the week, which looks cooler than it’s been for a long while, westerlies persist. I’m serious about the rest day on Saturday. You’ll be glad you did come Sunday and Monday!
