Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! Westerlies continue for the extended period. Strongest wind looks to be today, Monday, and potentially Tuesday. High temps hover around 70 degrees, meaning beach time will be just as nice as the time you’re spending on the river!

Thursday starts with pressures of 29.92/29.83/29.75 for gradients of 0.09 and 0.08. It’s cloudy from Portland into the Gorge, and those clouds will stick around for at least part of the day. Offshore high pressure isn’t all that strong, but it’s there aiding and assisting. You’ll probably want to head somewhere east of Hood River for the strongest results. The day starts with 13-16ish most places between Stevenson and Arlington with low 20s at Viento and the Rufus zone. We’ll see the Stevenson to Mosier stretch pick up to gusty 15-18 under partly cloudy sky. That zone holds all 15-18ish all day. Looking east, we see Lyle to Rufus fill in at 21-24 this morning with 17-20 at Arlington. The Lyle to Doug’s stretch tops out at 23-26, perhaps a bit more. From Avery to Threemile, you’ll find 28-31 this afternoon. River flow over the last 24 hours was 68-109kcfs, river temp is 69.26F, and high temp forecast is 68F for Hood River and 72F for Arlington.

Brief ridging on Friday knocks the wind down in the morning, but a system approaching Vancouver Island could bump it up a bit in the afternoon. The day starts with 11-14 from Viento to Swell with 7-10 at Stevenson and areas east of Swell. Not much happens in the morning. Early afternoon westerlies rise to 17-20 from Stevenson to Hood River. They shift eastward after a few hours. That leaves Stevenson to Hood River with gusty 14-17 and Mosier to Avery with 17-20. East of there: not much. High temp in Hood River will be in the low 70s.

A weak system on Saturday brings lots of clouds to the west side. The day starts with 11-14 from Stevenson to The Dalles with less wind to the east. Get some other stuff done in the morning. Early in the afternoon, the wind rises to 14-17 from Stevenson to Mosier, 18-21 form Lyle to Avery, and 11-14 at Rufus. Afternoon: best results will be Lyle to Avery at 20-23. High temp: 70F.

Extended: Sunday looks to be in the teens. Monday looks windier, especially in the evening. Monday’s focus should be the Corridor, areas near Hood River. There seem to be some timing differences in the ensembles for Tuesday’s forecast, and there’s definitely a LOT of range in the possible outcomes. About 50% of the ensemble members give us a big eastern Gorge day. We’ll keep a close eye on this one, for sure. Wednesday probably brings some sort of marginal westerlies. Beyond that, the range of possible general weather outcomes increases rapidly, meaning predicting the wind isn’t possible. Have a great day out there today!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! As you can tell by looking at the clouds outside your window, something’s changed out there. Cool air has arrived aloft, and it’ll stick around for much of the next week. Despite this, we’ll hold on to just enough thermal gradient across the Cascades to keep the wind going, and we’ll also have offshore high pressure for a good portion of this period. That’ll help the wind too. With the weather this active, predicting the wind, especially several days in advance, gets tricky. I’ll do my best for you!

Wednesday starts with a low pressure system moving towards the Washington coast. As it and its accompanying front move inland this afternoon, the wind will pick up some. West of Lyle, the wind stays at 7-10mph or less all day long. Not much happens this morning in the eastern Gorge either. Afternoon sees the desert heat and the wind slowly increase: we’ll start the afternoon with 17-20ish from Rufus to Boardman. As clouds burn back, the wind rises to 20-23 from Lyle to Threemile with Boardman at 17-20. Keep in mind that those eastern Gorge sensors tend to read high compared to Swell/Hatch – this forecast predicts to the sensors. River flow over the last 24 hours was 66-124kcfs, river temp is 69.44F, and high temp forecast is 68F for Hood River and 71F for Arlington.

We’ll have quite the marine layer to start Thursday. Other good news: increasing (but still rather weak) offshore high pressure and hotter weather in eastern Washington, especially to the north. The day starts with 11-14 from Stevenson to Doug’s with 20-23 from Avery to Threemile. The wind drops to 10mph or less west of The Dalles in the morning and rises to 25-28 from Avery to Boardman. As clouds burn off, westerlies rise to 13-16 from Stevenson to Mosier, 22-25 from Lyle to Doug’s, and 27-30 from Avery to Threemile. High temp: 68F for Hood River and 73F for Arlington.

Not much happens on Friday: 11-14 all morning long from Stevenson to Hood River with lighter wind to the east. Afternoon heating in the desert drives the wind up to 17-20 from Stevenson to Doug’s. East of there: light and variable or light westerlies. High temp: 73F for Hood River. Arlington: 76F.

Extended: the ensembles for Saturday bring a decent chance of mid-20s or a bit more for the eastern Gorge. Lesser wind is forecast on Sunday, perhaps upper teens to low 20s. We start to see more range in the possibilities for Monday and Tuesday. That said, about 50% of the ECMWF ensemble members like the idea of a big day in the eastern Gorge on Tuesday. They also call for some rain that day which could complicate the picture. I have something scheduled that day at an inconvenient time for a Rufus mission. I’m going to change it just in case. Enjoy the clouds and cooler weather today – have a great day!
