Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! A few windy days are on tap, and along with this round of wind, we’ll have cooler temps. We’ll even see marine layer for the next few days! Focus your attention on the Corridor and near east today, anywhere you want on Monday, and east of Hood River on Tuesday. Beyond that? Well, we know the cooler weather will continue, but we start to see more spread in the wind predictions. Remember to support the fire fighting efforts: if you see planes or helicopters scooping water from the river at your chosen launch, go somewhere else.

Sunday starts with pressures of 30.06/29.94/29.91 and 1024mb offshore. Portland: completely covered in marine clouds. That gives us gradients of 0.12 and 0.03 to start the day. That’s plenty! Let’s call it 21-24 from Viento to Hood River with 18-21 near Mosier to start. All other locations were under 10mph at 7am. It’ll take the desert some time to heat up, but when it does, the wind will build. For the morning, we’ll see Viento to Mosier build to 22-25. Lyle to Arlington builds to 13-16 this morning. Stevenson eventually breaks free of the morning doldrums and joins at 22-25. If the marine layer holds, we’ll see 24-27 from Stevenson to Doug’s late morning. Afternoon wind, thanks to desert heating, builds to 24-27 from Viento to Avery. 27-30 isn’t out of the question, especially between Lyle and Avery. Rufus builds to 23-26 (the equivalent of 19-22 readings at Swell) early afternoon and holds into the evening. Arlington: 20-23ish. If your only option is late in the day, keep an eye on the Corridor (Swell to Hood River) – the wind should hold there today. Or, if it dips mid-afternoon, it should come back for that executive session. River flow over the last 24 hours was 89-165kcfs, river temp is 71.78F, and high temp forecast is 81F.

Monday kicks off with another round of solid marine clouds on the west side. A weak system approaches offshore, and that should keep the west side cool. Want to play? You’ll be able to do it pretty much everywhere. We’ll start with 20-23 at Stevenson and 23-26 from Viento to Arlington. Late morning wind rises to 25-28 from Viento to Mosier and 28-31 from Lyle to Arlington with 22-25 at Threemile. The wind holds for the rest of the day. 30-33mph averages from Lyle to Arlington isn’t out of the question. That puts dinner at Amayah’s Indian Curry and Kababs (Biggs) in play for Monday. High temp: 74F for Hood River and 82F for Arlington.

Marine clouds push even deeper inland on Tuesday as a weak trough arrives. This knocks down the temp gradients. Clouds will be late to dissipate on the west side. Focus your energy to the east. After a 21-24mph dawn patrol between Viento and Mosier, the wind falls to 17-20 west of The Dalles. Afternoon westerlies eventually rise to 25-29 from Mosier to Arlington. Under the clouds to the west: gusty 13-16ish. Threemile: 22-25. High temp: 72F for Hood River and 77F for Arlington.

Extended: After losing the support of offshore high pressure on Tuesday, we’ll enter a period of somewhat lighter wind (probably). Models have us in the teens on Wednesday and low 20s on Thursday. Beyond that, there’s quite a bit of range in the exact details. Generally speaking, it appears temps will be below normal next weekend with inland troughing and offshore high pressure. That’s a good setup for wind and also for hanging on the beach – cooler weather is good for hanging out, right? Have a great day on the water today. I’ll see you out there!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! Windy, cooler weather is on the way for every day in the extended forecast. Models even toss in some days when the eastern Gorge will perform as well: Monday, Tuesday, and Friday for now. Moving parts (troughs moving inland with cooler air, to be specific) could impact the quality/reliability a bit, but there should be plenty of wind even with that atmospheric motion. Today’s PSA: if you see aircraft scooping water from the Columbia near where you’re recreating, get off the water or go somewhere else. Those aircraft are part of the fire fighting teams, and the Coast Guard is watching recreationalist behavior closely right now. Discussions were had about shutting down recreational use, so do your part to respect the fire crews. On to the forecast…

Saturday starts with 5am pressures of 30.03/29.92/29.91 for gradients of 0.10 and 0.01. That’s a good start! There were no marine clouds present in the metro area (not helpful), and atmospheric instability is forecast all day from about Cascade Locks eastward (not ideal). All that said… westerlies quickly rise to 20-23 from Viento to Swell with 17-20 near Hood River and 13-16 at Mosier. By late morning, the wind fills in at 20-23 from Stevenson to Mosier with 17-20 near Rowena. Given the heat in the metro area and the instability aloft, the wind will likely fall to 15-18 or a touch less from Swell to Hood River in the afternoon. Stevenson, Viento, and Mosier hold at 20-23. Between Lyle and Avery, afternoon westerlies rise to gusty 22-25. Rufus: 17-20. East of Rufus, the wind remains light today. It’s worth noting that instability could disrupt the wind this afternoon if any thunderstorms pop up. That’s more likely east of Viento than west of Viento. River flow over the last 24 hours was 95-164kcfs, river temp is 71.60F, and high temp forecast is 87F.

Sunday sees a better marine push on the west side and increased atmospheric stability. Also in place: a nice temperature gradient across the Cascades and supportive high pressure offshore. Opening play: 20-23mph from Viento to Mosier with 16-20 at Stevenson and 13-16 from Lyle to Arlington. The wind quickly builds to 24-27 from Stevenson to Doug’s. Eastern Gorge sites lag behind; we’ll see a slow morning build to 17-20. If you want the eastern Gorge, you’ll have it (although it’ll be windier out there Monday). Afternoon wind rises to 26-29 from Lyle to Rufus with 23-26 at Arlington and 11-14 east to Boardman. Models insist that wind on the west side will hold at 24-27 (Stevenson to Mosier) into the evening. Sounds like a great day! High temp: 82F for Hood River and 91F for Arlington.

Writing the complete forecast takes me 1-2 hours a day. If it saves you time, gas money, or helps you plan your life, please consider contributing.

A deeper marine push on Monday combines with an approaching trough (cooler air, for brevity). While the atmospheric action isn’t ideal, the marine air on the west side should keep the situation plenty stable for a big day. Dawn patrol looks like 25-28 from Viento to Arlington with 13-16 at Stevenson and 22-25 at Threemile. Keep in mind that dawn patrol’s quality/quantity depends on marine cloud penetration: if those clouds push past Hood River, so will the dawn patrol! Anyway… The marine clouds burn off and leave us with 27-30 from Viento to Mosier and 29-32 from Lyle to Arlington. Stevenson: depends on those clouds… it should rise to 24-27 eventually. Threemile and Boardman will be late to the game, but models suggest they too will rise to 30mph or so late afternoon. High temp: 74F for Hood River and 81F for Arlington.

Extended: Cooler air filters in all the way to the desert on Tuesday. Marine clouds push past Hood River. Models suggest the focus for wind will shift to the Lyle-Rufus stretch. For now, call it 27-30. Lesser westerlies, but still plenty if you believe the ensembles, stick around Wednesday and Thursday. Ensembles like the idea of a bigger eastern Gorge day on Friday. That’s a loooooooong ways out to be forecasting, so hold that forecast lightly. Enjoy the wind and the cooler temps. See ya out there!
