8/2 Forecast

We’re starting off with light east winds this morning. There’s a small chance we’ll see enough for kiting or windsurfing this morning for a couple of hours, so keep an eye on the free wind meter on the city of Stevenson’s website. Whatever we get isn’t going to last long.

A front approaches the coast this afternoon, making the wind switch direction. I think we’ll see 16-19 late today, just enough for you to beat the heat with a late-day session on the river.

Tomorrow looks a little more promising for wind. Models are all over the place with the timing, but the overall picture has a front pushing into the Northwest during the day. This generally makes the wind pretty gusty, but it’s hard to complain about solid west winds at the end of August. So… I think we’ll see 25-28 tomorrow by midday. One model, however, is suggesting we could see 30-35 late in the afternoon, so do throw your small gear in the car when you head out.

The weekend is looking windy, as a low pressure trough builds and shifts east.

In other news, today is the Post and Pint ride out of dirty fingers bike repair. Sure, it’s a little dusty up there, but Mitchell has plenty of cold beverages to rinse your dusty throat after the ride. Also tonight is the Hood River Triathlon. That’s a 500 meter swim, a 7 mile bike and a 2 mile run. Meet at 545 at the Event Site. Bonus points if you can figure out how to do both!

Whatever you do today, have an awesome day!

Wind junkies, are you ready for a rest day now? Today’s looking light on the water, but it’s looking like a great day for river sweeping, I mean, standup paddling. It’s also looking like a great day for a morning hike or road ride, before temperatures climb near ninety this afternoon.

Tomorrow looks windier. High pressure builds over the Norhtwest and lower pressure hangs off the coast. We’ll see easterlies tomorrow, which is better than no wind at all, with peak winds in the 17-20 range early tomorrow morning. As a front moves towards the coast tomorrow, winds fade to nothing, likely becoming light westerlies in the afternoon.

As that front hits the Northwest Thursday night, gradients build through the gorge. The models are having a tough time with this system, but it’s looking pretty windy at this point… at least mid twenties westerlies with the possibility of low thirties.

In other news, today is the first day of the Wild and Scenic Environmental film festival outdoors at Springhouse Cellars in Hood River. Pre-movie social hour starts at 7, and the film starts at 8. I read through the list of movies, and they all sound pretty good, so I’m making this my recommendation for today.

In other news, the Dirty Divas are having a mountain bike campout at Lewis River tonight. Call Disco Bikes for more details. And also, seriously, don’t forget the Bigfoot party in Home Valley on Friday and Saturday.
