Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Wind will be variable 10-15 in the morning and light and variable in the afternoon.

Tuesday brings high clouds with a chance of some very light rain/mist/sprinkles in the afternoon. The snow level will be 5000′ early, 6500′ in the afternoon, and 7500′ overnight. Wind on Tuesday will be SSW 10 in the morning, WSW 15 in the afternoon, and SW 15 after midnight.

Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s Monday morning, and we’re starting off with light westerlies and gradients of .04 (pdx-dls) and .04 (dls-psc). If the models are correct, and I suspect they are, the wind will fade to calm through the whole Gorge by early afternoon. River temp is 44, and flow is 450kcfs at The Dalles. Tuesday starts with E 25-30 at Rooster and backs off to E 15-20 in the afternoon. Wednesday starts with E 15-20 and turns around to W 13-16 from Hood River to Arlington in the afternoon. Thursday looks light and variable and rainy.

Random Morning Thoughts

Today is the first day of spring quarter at my school (that’s PSU, in case you were curious). I have this mixed feeling of dread and excitement. School, and all that driving, is exhausting, and this is going to be 11 weeks of hell. On the other hand, after this 11 weeks, I have summer quarter, with only one day of driving to the city, lots of biking, and lots of windsurfing. So, I’m excited!

The next 11 weeks will involve a lot of time management on my part. I’ll be evaluating what things are most important in my life and prioritizing those. This is something all of us do, not necessarily consciously.

Ordering our priorities often comes out of a feeling that we “should” do X or “have to” do Y. In some cases, that may be true. However, when we leave our own needs (exercise, sleep, relaxation, solitude, etc.), we undermine our ability to be fully present for the other to-dos on our list.

When life is busy, it’s even more important than at other times to create space for the things that nourish us. You may feel guilty turning down time with a friend in favor of a bike ride, but that bike ride will put you in a better space to give your friend the loving attention they deserve.

My point is this: when you’re organizing your busy life, don’t forget to make time for you. That time is what will make you able to be there for everyone and everything else. Have an awesome day!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 40 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s a mostly clear and lovely early morning at my house, but there are some low clouds at the mountain, suggesting that some of you are under the clouds, and some of you are frosty under clear sky. Expect temps in the upper 30’s at river level this morning and the mid 50’s this afternoon under sunny sky. Light west wind will likely go calm in the afternoon. No rainbows. Tuesday brings high clouds and a very slight chance of just a few sprinkles mid-afternoon. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and the low 60’s in the afternoon. East wind. 1% chance of rainbows.

Wednesday looks partly cloudy with increasing clouds in the evening. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and the low 60’s in the afternoon. East wind early. Light west wind late. No rainbows. We’ll head into a rainy period on Thursday morning and stay there for a few days. Stock up on sunshine now.

White Sprinter Van of the Day

Road and Mountain Biking

Syncline is good. Hospital Hill is good. Columbia Hills and Easy CLIMB are good to go. Whoopdee and Post are not, unless you’re jogging. There’s lots of good road biking and gravel grinding to be had right now, especially with light wind over the next three days.

Upcoming Events

It’s Monday, and there’s meditation at Trinity Natural Medicine at noon. There’s donation-based yoga at Samadhi at 6, Pickup Basketball at the Mt. Hood Town Hall at 6:30, free Zumba at St. Francis House in Odell and at the Parkdale Community Center, and YogaFaith (Christ-centered yoga) at Pure Yoga in The Dalles.

Looking at next weekend, Saturday is the Fred Meyer fuschia sale and a half-day meditation retreat at Yoga Samadi. The Mosier School is hosting the RWJ Health Prize celebration on Saturday. There’s an interpretive hike at the Trout Lake Marsh on Sunday, and there’s a work party on the Whoopdee Trail Sunday.

Have an awesome day today!
