Good morning!
It’s 6:30, and the calm before the storm has settled over the Gorge. NOAA’s radar shows doom and destruction headed our way. With temperatures below freezing and over an inch of precipitable water headed our way, a wintry mix will soon fall out of the sky. How much? Enough to cause trouble on the roads and enough to go sledding on 7th Street.
It doesn’t look like surface winds will turn westerly until tomorrow sometime, so that should keep the precipitation mostly frozen until then. Let’s call it 6”+ of snow, switching to sleet (if we’re lucky) or freezing rain (if we’re not).

Up on the mountain, the snow has started. If I had to pick a time to go today, I’d say 11:30. Snow should be accumulating at 1” per hour or more by then, and the wind should still be moderate. By 4pm, though, it’s going to be pretty windy on Mt. Hood. If you’re not afraid of storm skiing, you’ll have fresh tracks every run. Otherwise, you’ll be running for the NYE party in the lodge.
There is a possibility that snow will switch to rain on Mt. Hood at some point this evening. It’s a really tough call, as massive amounts of precipitation (the forecast calls for 1.5” of water value or so), may cool the air enough to keep us in the snow. Cross your fingers. If it turns to rain tonight, snow will return for Friday (12” or so), Saturday (6-8” or so) and possibly Sunday (if snow levels remain low). Basically, it looks like a decent weekend on the slopes.
