Happy New Year, and happy birthday to Dave R, who brought us the Hatchcam!
First off, my favorite recreational activity has just been outlawed in Oregon: I can no longer talk on the phone without a hands-free device while driving. And, I can no longer text while driving. Remember, this is a primary offense in Oregon, meaning that you can be pulled over just for talking or texting. In Washington, it is a secondary offense, meaning you must do something else wrong to be pulled over for a phone offense. I might have to take a trip to Washington, just to talk and drive. This makes me sad, as I mostly drive alone, and enjoy talking and driving. And no, I don’t have a headset… it’s coming in the mail this week…
On a more serious note, it’s still raining on Mt. Hood this morning (well, it's raining at the lodges and snowing at the top of Mt. Hood Express). It was snowing, theoretically, yesterday, but it wasn’t behaving like snow. The stuff falling from the sky was white, but it was just sticky rain. Rain runs off your outerwear, but this stuff, snain, is equally wet and sticks to you. Thankfully, Meadows is kind enough to pass out high-performance outerwear (plastic bags with armholes) free of chrage, and will loan you a Sharpie if you’d like to customize your new rainwear.
The snow level is forecast to drop mid-afternoon, switching the rain over to snow. If you can handle the wet, the snow will be fun on the groom and in the parks. With a warm layer of wax on your skis, you’ll go ripping along on the wet groom and over the wet ramps. On a brighter note, at least the strongest winds associated with this storm have stayed above the main lifts…
Tomorrow looks better on the mountain, with lower snow levels and 6-8” of new or so, and Sunday looks partly sunny.
If you’re desperate for windsurfing and kiting, you can head to the cold, wet desert today. We’ll see some mid-twenties gusty westerlies out at Arlington late in the day. Can’t say I recommend that, with lots of water and debris in the river and sub-freezing temperatures.
Have a great day today, and have a fantastic 2010!
