6/16 forecast

We have another windy day lined up, We’ll see 13-15 early near Hood River, followed by a quick build to the 17-20 range from Stevenson to Hood River (it’s already in the upper teens at Swell). With the gradient already at .09 and lots of clouds in Portland, we’ll probably see 23-26 at the Hatch by mid-morning. And then, as a weak system pushes in late, the wind at Stevenson will pick up to 25-28, the Corridor will see a brief upper twenties period, and then Arlington will see 26-30.

Access to super cheap gear including Trew, Zeal, Sierra Designs, and many more.

Tomorrow looks lighter, as low pressure off the coast and a weak ridge inland weaken the gradients. The wind will be 17-20 from Hood River to Moiser in the morning, picking up to 22-25 from Stevenson to Rowena in the afternoon.

On Saturday, the wind starts off light, but high pressure builds at the coast mid-morning, and the wind quickly picks up to 21-24 by midday. In the afternoon, a system pushes in, sending the wind at Arlington and Stevenson into the 27-30 range.

Coming up on Saturday, there are about a zillion things going on: the free White Salmon backyard half marathon happens in the morning. It’s free, except they are accepting donations to the White Salmon Cross-Country team (Just so you know, when I was a kid, government paid for schools, not kids and the local community doing fundraisers for every school group. But big government is bad, right? Right.). Also on Saturday, there’s a work party in Post Canyon to finish Doug Van Zandt’s new cross-country bike trail, Mobius. Going on Saturday all day, it’s the Master Gardeners’ Garden Tour. In kiteboarding world, Saturday and Sunday brings the Cabrinha race series to the Hood River Marina. And finally, if all that doesn’t tire you out, Saturday night at the British Pub in Hood River, it’s the summer kickoff boombox party brought to you by 2nd Wind sports and Team Airush…

6/15 Forecast

We have more clouds this morning, and It’s going to be windy again. we’ll see westerlies this morning in the 23-26 range from Mosier to Rowena, picking up to 26-30, possibly more, this afternoon from Hood River all the way out to Arlington. Given the depth of the marine layer, it’s unlikely we’ll see anything more than gusty 15-18 near Hood River. My picks for strong wind today will be Doug’s, Rowena, Avery and Maryhill, with Roosevelt a little less windy.

Coming up tomorrow, the wind backs off a bit and the skies clear out a bit too. We’ll see westerlies in the 21-24 range from Stevenson to Hood River starting midday, filling in as far east at Maryhill in the afternoon.

The Clymb: free membership.
Access to super cheap gear including Trew, Zeal, Sierra Designs, and many more.

The wind backs off more on Friday as an upper level low sets up off the Oregon Coast. We’ll see westerlies in the 5-10 range near Hood River Friday morning, picking up to 16-19 in the afternoon. This looks like my best chance to sleep in. =)

The Pistol River contest starts tomrorow and runs through Sunday, so expect less people at the expert windsurf beaches this weekend, and possibly less SUPpers, as there’s a cash-prize SUP contest too.

Coming up tonight at Columbia Center for the Arts in Hood River, local author Scott Cook presents films and slides of the Columbia Gorge, including three classic Lassie flicks filmed in the Gorge. Scott’s talk starts at 7:30, and it’s free.

Also this evening, it’s the ladies-only Post and Pinot ride, meeting at Dirty Fingers at 5:30, followed by wine by Naked Winery and a free bike mechanical clinic by Dirty Fingers. Tonight is also the Kayak Shed’s shop paddle at 5:30 at Husum. Tomorrow night, as always on Thursday, it’s the co-ed Post and Pint ride leaving Dirty Fingers at 5:30.

Finally, don’t forget about the free White Salmon Half-Marathon on Saturday (donations are accepted, and go to support the WS cross-country team), the Master Gardeners Garden Tour, and the Post Canyon work party to finish Mobius Strip, DVZ’s new project that will make you climbing, cross-country biker types very happy. Speaking of biking, remember that Hospital Hill is closed this week. Please respect the closure.

Have an awesome day today!
