Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

If you’re not a storm skier, you’re going to like the weekend forecast for Mt. Hood: cool, light wind, light snowfall, and occasional sunbreaks. That’ll be followed by a couple of sunny days. Next chance for a big dumping of snow is next week on Thursday, but models disagree on quantity of precip as well as whether it will fall as rain or snow.

For Friday, there will be intermittent snowfall on the mountain after a partly cloudy start. The snow level will be 1000-1500′ during the day and as low as 0′ after midnight. About .2-.3” water value (WV) falls during the day, for 2-4” of powder. Another inch of new snow falls tonight. Widn will be SW 15 early, SW 20-25 in the afternoon, and SE 15 after midnight as a big area of low pressure settles over the Northwest.

Saturday brings flurries in the morning, a chance of sunbreaks in the afternoon, and light snowfall overnight. The snow level will be 0-500′ early, 2000′ in the afternoon, and 0-1000′ overnight. A trace falls during the day, and a couple inches of new snow falls overnight. Wind will be light and variable during the day and NW 10-15 overnight.

Sunday sees light snowfall during the day, partly cloudy sky in the afternoon, and occasional flurries overnight. About an inch of snow falls during the day and another inch falls overnight. Wind will be NW 15 in the morning, W 20 in the aftenroon, and W 25 overnight.

Monday starts partly cloudy and turns sunny. The snow level peaks at 2500′. W wind at 25 ealry and WSW 10 in the afternoon. Tuesday looks sunny and warmer. The free air freezing level peaks at 5500′. Light wind. The next system is slated for Wednesday night into Thrusday. The GFS keeps the snow level at 4500′ or so. The ECMWF likes 6000-6500′. We’ll have to keep an eye on this to see how it develops.

Random Morning Thoughts

One of the things we athletes learn to do is to push ourselves longer and harder than our minds think possible. This can make us stronger. Sometimes we also take this approach with the rest of our lives. We pile things on. We ignore increasing stress levels. We continuously go at 100%.

This is a recipe for burnout and collapse. When was the last time you stopped to rate how much of your capacity you are using? Never? Not recently? Well stop for a moment and reflect. If the answer to that question is “near 100%”, you may want to consider freeing up more space in your life. If you’re already at 100% and something unexpected happens, you’re going to get pushed over the edge, whatever “edge” looks like for you.

So take a little time to think about your life. How stressed are you? How much space do you have in case something happens? How can you free up some capacity. If you can’t right now, what’s your long-term plan for a more manageable life? May you be at ease. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time at Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely. Forecasting and counseling are both deeply meaningful and nourishing to me.

Gorge Wind Forecast

For Friday, we’ll have west wind at 7-10 this morning and east wind at 5-10 this afternoon. Saturday looks like E 10-15 in the morning with calm wind after 2pm. Sunday starts with light west wind and picks up to W 18-22 in the afternoon from Mosier to Maryhill.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s mostly clear right now, but that won’t last long. Clouds and showers return by midday. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and mid 40’s this afternoon. Light and variable wind. 23% chance of rainbows. Saturday might start with a few scattered snow flurries under cloudy sky. No accumulation. The rest of the day looks dry with light rain/snow in the evening. Temps will be near 30 early and in the upper 40’s in the afternoon. Light wind. 5% chance of rainbows. Sunday sees a few morning snowflakes followed by partly cloudy sky. Temps will be near 30 early and in the mid 40’s in the afternoon. Moderate west wind. 33% chance of rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

I’ve seen some photos from the lower half of Syncline, and that looks good. However, if temps dip below freezing, we’ll be in a freeze-thaw cycle. So, if it was below freezing last night, do not ride today. Other than that, I’m not sure where you’d go mountain biking right now. There’s lots of snow scattered about. You could go for a mixed surface ride around the Heights and the Valley.

Upcoming Events

It’s Friday, first Friday, actually. I’m not sure if there’s anything going on downtown, but you could go shopping and support local businesses just for fun! The Kickstand Coffee Run is this morning at 7am: 4.1 miles of walking or jogging gets you a free cup of coffee and a donut. There’s a trail run tomorrow morning at 8am in Post Canyon.

Have an awesome day today!
