Now that fall is here with windless days, it’s time to ride road bikes. You’re in shape after a summer of pedaling, so sign yourself up for the Echelon Gran Fondothis weekend. There’s a road ride (30/80/100 miles) and a dirt ride (35 miles). The dirt ride is on a mix of dirt roads and paved roads, with the possibility of adding a little singletrack and riding along with you will be Greg LeMond. Start time is 8am Saturday at Full Sail, and it’s a mass start, so should make for good spectating. The ride is fully supported by Hammer (gel, etc) and Solstice, and Knead, and other local companies. Even if you don’t want to ride, you can still get in on the action. The afterparty runs from 3-6, with $15 getting you delicious food and the chance to hang out with a bunch of smoking hot cyclists. If you sign up between now and Friday, enter the code “hood” and get $25 off.

It looks like summer weather is going to stick around all week, with temperatures in the 80’s from Portland all the way to the eastern end of the Gorge. This means we’re not going to see much wind at all this week. At best, we’ll see alternating easterlies and westerlies in the 5-10 range.

With that out of the way, we can move on to important stuff: local events. Today’s Wednesday, and that means it’s Post and Pinot night at Dirty Fingers Bike Repair. Due to lack of daylight, this is the last ladies mountain bike ride of the season, so head to Dirty Fingers at 5:30 tonight to get in on the fun.

Tomorrow night is bell lap Post and Pint, meaning there’s just one left after this one, so if you like to ride bikes and drink beer, you’ve got two more Thursday rides to do it.

Coming up this weekend, there’s the Hood River Harvest Ride and the Echelon Gran Fondo on Saturday. The Harvest Ride benefits the Hood River Valley Residents’ Committee, and the Gran Fondo benefits OHSU’s cancer research and local charities. If you’re not signed up for the Gran Fondo, sign up between now and Friday with the discount code “hood”, all lowercase, and get $25 off. If you sign up for the Dirt Fondo, you’ll be riding with Greg Lemond.

Also coming up this Saturday, it’s the Gorge Kids Triathlon at the Hood River Waterfront Park, benefiting health and fitness programs at Hood River Elementary Schools.

Have an awesome day today!

Now that the kids are back in school, the nights are cooling off, and the tourists are starting to leave the Gorge, it’s time to think skiing and snowboarding. Meadows passes are now on sale for the you-don’t-need-three-friends price of $499. Included in that price is the new Stadium Express lift (use your imagination and giggle when you realize the only possible abbreviation for that lift), eliminating the need for you to use the cattle crossing to Star (snowboarders, cheer loudly). The new lift gets you over to Star, HRM and Heather (it tops out at the same spot as Heather) without waiting in the MHX line. At this point, we’re looking at a weak La Nina or a neutral year, meaning average (450”) or better (max=830”) snowfall. I’ll do the statistical analysis and get back to you. Buy your season pass now!

I’ll start off the forecast today by saying that we’re not going to see much wind for the next few days. We’ll have light west wind today, picking up to 10-15 later. Tomorrow brings very light wind and Tuesday brings east wind at 10-15.

With the wind forecast out of the way, we can talk about the rain, which is good for the firefighter, the mountain bikers and the gardeners. We’ll see on and off rain today, picking up late this afternoon, but if you’re a weather watcher, you’ll be feeling a bit blind, as NOAA is upgrading Portland’s Doppler radar, so you won’t be able to see the rain coming hours in advance. That radar should be back up next week.

Access to super cheap gear including Trew, Zeal, Sierra Designs, and many more.

If you’re looking for something to do today, the Tieton River is running and there’s a river rodeo today. If you’re sticking around here, there’s a cyclocross race at the Hood River High School, and it’s Dog Days at Skibowl from 10:30 to 1:30. This event’s a benefit for Oregon Guide Dogs for the Blind. There are doggie goodies, hiking with dogs, and a best pet trick contest.

Fall is pretty much here, and that means the weekly activities are coming to an end. Free Monday Tai Chi is over, and this is the last week for Mountain View’s casual alternative bike ride on Monday evenings.

I’d also like to give a big thanks to everyone who showed up for the cleanup on the White Salmon River yesterday. The cleanup crew removed a giant dumpster (think industrial-sized) of trash from the river and the area around the boat ramp. It may not look wild and scenic at the mouth of the White Salmon now, but it’s a lot prettier than it was.

Speaking of the White Salmon, they’ve been trucking fish above Condit Dam, as they expect many of the eggs below the dam will be washed away when they blow it. So, if you head above Northwestern Lake (which looks more like a river now), you can see spawning salmon in the White Salmon again. Pretty cool.
