Yesterday ended up being a monster of an east wind day in Stevenson and at Rooster Rock. We’re not going to see anything so spectacular today. The wind starts out light out of the east this morning, picking up out of the west this afternoon, and blowing in the 17-20 range from Stevenson to Mosier.

The wind starts out light again tomorrow, and then as a system passes to the north late in the afternoon, westerlies pick up to 10-15 near Hood River and, briefly, 23-26 east of The Dalles. On Sunday, a big low pressure system off the coast turns the wind around again, and we’ll see light easterlies for much of the day.

Coming up this evening, it’s rugby night at the Hood River Marina. It’s touch rugby, so it’s open to everyone, and no experience is required. Game starts at 6pm. And if that’s not enough rugby for you, there’s another pickup touch rugby game in Mosier at 4pm on Sunday.

Also this weekend, on Saturday, it’s Hops Fest in Hood River from noon ‘til 9pm. It’s also Ocktoberfest in Leavenworth, where you can ride bikes with the Dirty Fingers Bike Repair gang. If you want to ride bikes here, the best riding is either to the west or at higher elevations, where the rain has turned the dirt into mountain bike perfection. While you’re out on the trails, keep your eyes open for chanterelles and boletes, because they’re starting to pop up where it’s been raining.

Have an awesome day today!

Yesterday turned into a big east wind day, despite the lack of wind in the morning. I was expecting mid-twenties this morning, but the iWindsurf Rooster Rock sensor says 38. That’s windy. Stevenson is in the mid-twenties. That is also somewhat windy. If you want to get on the water, do it early, because the wind will die by midday. Tomorrow starts off light, picking up to west 13-16 late in the afternoon from Stevenson to Hood River. Saturday looks like light wind.

For you mountain bikers who’ve been bummed about the lack of rain, you can cheer up. It might not have rained in lower Post Canyon, but the trails above GP, especially the 140 trail, are in excellent shape, so try riding upper Post instead of Lower for a change of pace.

If you’re a bike commuter, swing by Dog River from 7:30 to 9 this morning for the Bike Commute Challenge awards. If you show up on a bike, you get free coffee. For you Washingtonians, head to 10 Speed North tomorrow morning from 7:30 to 9 for your Bike Commute Challenge awards party.

If you’ll be around this weekend, there’s the Green Living Tour, a fundraiser for the Gorge Earth Center, where you can check out all sorts of green homes in Hood River and Mosier. Head to cgec.org for more information about the tour. It’s $20 for a carload of people or it’s $15 for a group of cyclists.

Also this weekend, it’s the Dirty Fingers Customer Appreciation Campout at Leavenworth. Grab your Lederhosen and come ride some new trails!
