Good morning!

There was some craziness on the Columbia River yesterday, especially at Rowena and Maryhill, where liquid smoke blew 10 feet high across the river. My friend Morgan and I sailed with Julia at T** W***, where 3.2 was a bit big. If you’re thinking of heading out, remember that it’s quite chilly out there; the river is now at 54 degrees.

Today brings west wind at 26-30 east of the low clouds, probably Rowena to Threemile. Tomorrow looks light. Wednesday brings east wind at 21-24. Because of the east wind pulling cold air in from the desert, there’s a decent chance we’ll see some snowflakes in Hood River from this system. In addition, if the low pressure center stays off the coast as predicted, the easterlies may hold a long time, giving us a longer potential snow period. On top of that, if we don’t get snow in the Gorge from this system, we’ll most likely get it early next week.

Moving on to snow in the mountains, we’ll see the snow level at 4000’ this morning, dropping to 2000’ tonight with .3-.4” WV, for 3-5” of new snow. Mt. Hood wind will be WNW 40-50 early, going to 25-35 in the afternoon.

Tomorrow looks partly cloudy to clear on Mt. Hood, with light wind and the freezing level at 2000’.

I am truly sorry to say that Wednesday looks like a mess on Mt. Hood. It looks great if you’re a kayaker hoping for more water in your favorite river. The snow level starts off at 3000’ with SW wind at 15-20. When the system hits around 1pm, the snow level rises to 5000’, rising further to 6500’ with the bulk of the moisture. We’ll start with wet snow, switching to rain at 5000’, with 1-2” of the wet stuff.

Fortunately, by 4am Thursday, the snow level will be back down around 3000’, dropping to 1000’ by 10am, with 1” of WV during the day, for 12-14” of new snow in blizzard conditions, with the wind at W 50-55.

Friday-Tuesday look cold and snowy. Chance of Meadows in the next two weeks: 90%. Skibowl: 60%.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast – 5000′

If you’re a windsurfer or kiter who isn’t afraid of the cold, today is your day. The gradients are at .20/.03 right now, and should shift east. Head east of the clouds today for 30+, or stay in the rain for low twenties. We’ll see leftover wind tomorrow out east at 23-26 with 15-18 under the clouds. Tuesday looks light.

In snow news, we’ll see the snow level around 5500’ today, with west wind at 40-50 on Mt. Hood. We’ll see orographic snow flurries for 1-2” of new snow.

Tomorrow sees the bulk of the moisture head north of us. The snow level will be 4000’ early, falling to 2000’ late in the day. Mt. Hood wind will be W 40-50 early, going to WNW 30-40 in the afternoon. Total snowfall will be 2-3”.

Tuesday starts off dry on Mt. Hood with the snow level around 2000’ and west wind at 20-25. We’ll see an inch or two of new snow during the day. The snow level starts rising in the afternoon ahead of a system packed with subtropical moisture, hitting 4500’ by midnight.

That systems swings onshore Wednesday midday. At this point, the storm looks far enough offshore that we won’t see a true Pineapple Express. However, sadly, it does look like the snow level will climb to 6000-7000’, with an inch of rain on the mountain. Having said that, we’re still quite a few days out, and things could change.
