Mt. Hood Snow Forecast – 5000′

Good morning!

More moisture came in overnight than I expected, giving the mountains a couple inches of new snow by this morning. That’s good news, for sure. Right now (9am) it’s just above freezing, but it’s still snowing. We’ll see the snow level drop to 3500’ by 10am, and then rise back to 6000’ by 1pm and 7500’ by 7pm. Precip of some sort continues through 4pm, for .2-.3” water value (WV). That should be snow this morning, but will likely switch to rain midday at lower ski area elevations. Expect another 1-2” of snow today with light rain tonight. Wind will be SW 20-25 for much of the day, dropping to SW 10-15 this evening.

We’ll see .3” WV of rain Wednesday night into Thursday morning. Skies will be cloudy through 10am, clearing after that. The snow level will be 7500’ at 1am Thursday, dropping to 6500’ at 4am, rising to 8000’ by 10am and 10,000’ by 1pm. Wind will be SW at 20-25 early, pickng up to SW 25-30 early afternoon.

We’ll have high clouds Friday morning, becoming cloudy, with precip starting around 10am. The snow level will be 8000’ at 4am, 6500’ at 7am, 6000’ at 10am, and 4000’ by 10pm. We’ll see light rain during the day, starting around 10am, switching to snow late in the evening, for .1-.2” WV during the day and another .3” between 4pm Friday and 4pm Saturday. That should give us 2” or snow of new snow by Saturday morning.

Saturday starts off cloudy, becoming clear by midday. The snow level will be 2000’ early, dropping to 1000’ by 10am. Wind will be SW 25-30 early, swinging to W 20ish by mid-morning.

At this point, it looks like Sunday starts off dry, with heavy snow hitting sometime early afternoon.

Good morning!

Today is my day off, and you’d think I could manage to sleep in at least until the sun came up? Nope. 5:30am and I was awake. So, here’s your forecast, much earlier than I intended: Today brings increasing clouds on Mt. Hood. We’ll have a temperature inversion with a bubble of above freezing temps between 5000’ and 7500’ this morning. The freezing level falls to 5000’ this afternoon, with below-freezing temps in the Gorge. We’ll see trace amounts of precip tonight, up to .1”, for a trace of new snow in the mountains and a trace of ice or new snow in the Gorge. Wind today will be SW 10-15 on Mt. Hood all day.

Tomorrow sees mostly cloudy skies on Mt. Hood with the freezing level at 4000’ in the morning, rising to 5500’ by 1pm and 7500’ by 7pm. There won’t be more than a trace of precip, if any. Wind will be SW 20-25 in the morning, dropping to 15-20 in the afternoon.

Thursday starts off cloudy, becoming sunny and warm or high overcast and warm in the afternoon, with a chance of a trace of rain between 1am and 7am. The freezing level will be 7500’ at 4am, rising to 10000’ by 1pm with SW wind at 15-20.

The weather gets a little more interesting on Friday as the ridge starts breaking down. The freezing level will be 8000’ at 4am, dropping to 6500’ by 7am and 5500’ by 10am. We’ll see a slight chance of light rain in the morning before skies clear by 10am. Wind will be SW 25-30 at 4am, going to W 20-25 by 10am and NW 20-25 by 4pm.

Sometime this weekend the ridge will really break down. Saturday looks partly cloudy and dry. As of this morning, the GFS models favors a pretty nasty solution for Sunday: Snow before 10pm Saturday night, switching to rain after 10pm, with rain through 4am, switching back to snow sometime between 4am and 7am. Total precip in that period will be .4.-7″ with wind in the SW 25-30 range.

In other recreation news: For you windsurfers and kiters, there will be very strong east wind today. This is your last chance for strong wind in the next three days. There are a couple of Post Canyon related meetings this week, one with the county, and one with the HRAT’s. I’ll relay what I learn. If you’re desperate to work on trails, you can start pulling fallen branches from the Hospital Hill trails. The first section of Spring Street, to the second gate, has been cleared, but the Evergreen Highway is bound to be a mess and in need of your love.
