Good morning,

First things first today is that it’s First Friday in Hood River, the first big First Friday of the summer season, and First Friday kicks off yet another busy weekend in the Gorge. So, First Friday should probably be the first thing on your plate for this first weekend of May.

I’m thinking the highlight of the weekend is the Oregon Trail Rally. You can get more information at OregonTrailRally.com, but let me assure you that those guys are pretty amazing. If you go, make sure to cheer on local Dave Henderson in the blue Subaru in the Super Production class. Dave took me for a ride in his car at PIR yesterday, and he says they average over 60 mph on dirt roads. I also went for a ride with Al, who drives an orange Volvo, so you should cheer him on too. If you want to meet the drivers and their support staff, rumor has it the party’s at the Shilo Inn both Saturday and Sunday night.

If you’d rather ride than drive, CGORA has a 30-40 mile dirt bike ride leaving Pine Mont tomorrow (why do I have such a hard time getting the days of these events straight?) at 10am. If that’s too motorized for you, the next two days are the Dog River Enduro on the Dog River trail.

In wind news, we’ll start off with westerlies at 12-15 today, picking up to 24-28 this afternoon from Mosier east to Maryhill. Or maybe Doug’s east to Threemile. East of Hood River, either way, with 15-17 under the clouds near Hood River. Tomorrow brings gusty NW wind at 14-17 near Hood River, and Sunday brings warm weather with light east wind. That light wind should be good for standup paddling. You can try it for free courtesy of Big Winds at the Event Site on Saturday and Sunday.

In snow news, this is the last weekend at Meadows this season. They’ve had about a foot of new snow this week, and it’s 20 degrees and snowing up there this morning. If it stays cloudy today, the snow should be pretty good first thing tomorrow morning, and perhaps first thing Sunday morning, but it’s going to get sticky and chundery fast, so get it early both days.

Have an awesome day today!

Good morning,

The weather isn’t looking so great for playing outside today, with rain falling in the central Gorge through this afternoon before tapering off this evening. I was thinking today might be a good day for everyone from Hood River, White Salmon, and anywhere west of there to head to The Dalles for some road or mountain biking. Ah, spring. Don’t worry, kids. The sun will be back for a nice long haul by Saturday afternoon.

If you’re going for a road ride, get it early, because the wind is coming. It’ll start off light this morning, but as a low pressure system crosses the Cascades midday, we’ll see the west wind pick up. Expect 15-18 by afternoon near Hood River with 26-30 east of The Dalles. Coming up tomorrow, we’ll start off with 17-21 near Hood River, picking up to 23-26+ in the afternoon as a weak system moves toward the coast. We’ll see west wind in the teens to low twenties Saturday and a calm, sunny day on Sunday.

Coming up on Friday, it’s First Friday in Hood River, and you know that’s a good time, with art, music and social time downtown, so make plans to be there.

This weekend’s another fun and busy one. It’s the last weekend of ski season at Meadows, with skiing from 9am-3pm. It’s Cinco de Mayo, with parties everywhere. It’s the Oregon Trail Rally, with rally car racing on Middle Mountain on Saturday and near Dufur on Sunday. On Saturday and Sunday, Big Winds has free standup paddle demos at the Event Site, and on Saturday, CGORA has a dirt bike ride leaving Pine Mont at 10am.

Okay, I’m outa here. Thank you all again for voting for me in Grant’s photo contest. I’m going for a ride in a rally car today, thanks to you!

Have an awesome day today!
