Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Deep marine clouds stick around today and tomorrow, resulting in moderate to strong westerlies all the way east to Roosevelt. That’s good news for visitors for the US holiday week. Even better news: models suggest the wind will continue through next Tuesday or Wednesday before a probably switch to high pressure and a bit of a heat wave. But that’s way too far out to be banking on. For now…

Tuesday starts with marine clouds past Hood River. They’ll stick around most of the day in the metro area, driving solid westerlies through the entire Gorge. Head east of Hood River for the longest lasting wind today. 27-30 seems reasonable this afternoon from Rowena to Roosevelt. Morning westerlies in the western Gorge will be up-and-down 15-20. As the clouds burn back a bit, we should see Viento to Mosier pick up to 25-29. Stevenson: 20-24. River flow is 113kcfs and temp is 64 degrees.

On to Wednesday: deep clouds (9000′ or so) move in from the west and stick around for much of the day – Hood River will likely end up partly cloudy. Morning wind will be 12-15 pretty much everywhere. Stevenson to Roosevelt = “everywhere”. We’ll see the wind build to 24-27 from Viento to Rufus and 20-23 in other locations.

Thursday might start off with a few clouds near Hood River, but most likely they’ll be confined to areas west of Viento. Building offshore high pressure on Thursday contributes to stronger synoptic-scale gradients and steadier wind. The day starts with 19-22 from Viento to Moiser. By late morning, on through the afternoon, we’ll have 24-27 from Viento to Rufus. Do be prepared for a mid-afternoon lull near Swell as Portland heats up. Looking long-range, westerlies in the 20’s continue through next Tuesday or so before models hint at decreased wind and increased heat.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Coast (north/central/south, wind N unless otherwise specified). Tuesday: NW5/NW5/20-25, SW swell 2′ at 19 seconds. Wednesday: NW5/NW5/25-30, SW 2′ @ 18. Thursday: W5/NW5/25-30, SW 2′ @ 18. Jones Tuesday: 7-10. Wednesday: 10-13. Thursday: 12-15. Sauvie’s Tuesday: 5-8. Wednesday: 5-8. Thursday: 5-8.

Road and Mountain Biking

All local trails are snow-free. The only unconfirmed trail I have right now is Huffman Peak. Whoopdee is closed for logging, but Ronnoc trail and the climb out are open. Red Hill Road is supposedly closed for logging. Ride at your own risk. If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new parking area. The cows are off Hospital Hill!
