Before you read on, please remember that this report (wind, snow and events!) is brought to you free of charge. Nobody pays me to do this unless you do! If the report saves you time, money, keeps you in the loop, or just helps you have more fun, please take the time to

make a donation. Suggested minimum: $12. That gets you on the mailing list and in the running for prizes. That’s $1/month You pay more than that in gas driving to the beach or the mountain. I know I’ve saved you that much. Kick down! Thank you for your support!

Don’t forget: Outside Magazine is having a contest to name the best river town. Hood River is in the running. Now, I know we don’t want to encourage more people to move here, but remember, we have two secret weapon to scare off immigrants: the Inversion and Junuary. So, feel free to take part in the Facebook voting. You can vote once a day.

Also, Portland small business Mountain Soles, repairing your outdoor gear since 1979, is in the running for a Chase/Living Social $250,000 grant. If just a percentage of us go vote for them, they’ll be in the second round. They need 250 votes by June 30th. Click through. Log in with Facebook. Type “Mountain Soles” into the search box, and vote.

First thing this morning, if you weren’t at the showing of “Rising From Ashes” at Columbia Center for the Arts last night, you were in the wrong spot. Google it. Find a way to see it. It’s a stellar movie. Plus, the Rwandan bike team’s jerseys are rad, and you can support the team by purchasing one.

Second: for your road bikers, the powers that be have decided to chipseal 7-Mile road in The Dalles. They started yesterday. They are sealing top to bottom. You may want to find another ride for the next few weeks. With the Mt. Adams County Tour this weekend, the 88-23 loop above Trout Lake should be open. Maybe try that.

As for wind, we start off with some high clouds and light wind this morning. As a weather system moves overhead, the wind will pick up to gusty 23-26 this afternoon, with the strongest wind at Stevenson, filling in at Arlington late in the afternoon. There will probably be a couple of hours of steady wind at the Hatchery as well, mid-afternoon, before the gusties kick in.

Tomorrow starts out light, with westerlies slowly picking up in the corridor, hitting 21-24 in the afternoon. Saturday also starts off light, but picks up strong ahead of building high pressure, hitting 24-28 from Hood River to Maryhill in the afternoon. Sunday brings another round of solid westerlies from Hood River to Arlington.

Coming up tonight, it’s the hammerhead dirt ride, the Post and Pint, leaving Dirty Fingers at 5:30 to chase perfect dirt. Also tonight, the Thursday recovery ride at 5pm at Discover Bikes, free standup paddling demos at the Nicols Boat Basin, and a run with the triathlon folks at 5pm at Post Canyon.

Coming up on Saturday, it’s the Mt. Adams Country Tour bike ride, with an 11 mile loop, a 50 mile loop, and for you animals, 105 miles in the saddle. Get registered now, because they’ve got record registrations this year. If that’s not enough road biking, there’s the Cascade to Crown ride on Sunday, benefitting Parkinson’s resources of Oregon.

Also this weekend, free Ellsworth Bike demos at Post Canyon on Saturday from 10am – 4pm. Give Dirty Fingers Bike Repair a call for more details on the demos. For you Wind Johnnies, Big Winds has Naish kite demos on Saturday.

Okay. Back to watching SCOTUSblog.

Have an awesome day today!

6/27 Gorge wind and events

Good morning,

Columbia Center for the Arts, on June 27th, presents the cycling film Rising from Ashes, a feature length documentary about the first Rwandan National Cycling Team and their six year journey to the Olympic Games in London. It’s not about the bike. It’s about second chances, how our past doesn’t have to define our future, and the triumph of the human spirit over one of the world’s most devastating genocides. The story is told by Forrest Whitaker and follows Team Rwanda. Producer, director and Editor T.C. Johnstone will be on hand to talk about the film. The team’s top rider Adrien Niyonshuti rode in the Mt. Hood Cycling Classic and will be riding in the 2012 Olympic Summer Games. There will be a reception in the lobby at 7:00. with the film beginning at 7:30.

Before you read on, please remember that this report (wind, snow and events!) is brought to you free of charge. Nobody pays me to do this unless you do! If the report saves you time, money, keeps you in the loop, or just helps you have more fun, please take the time to

It’s going to be a gorgeous day today, a nice break from the Junuary weather. You can expect sunshine this morning, high clouds this afternoon, a high near 75, and light wind all day long. We have light easterlies this morning, and we’ll probably see light west this afternoon. A big upper low off the coast sends a weather system our way tomorrow, for west wind at 10-15 in the morning and 23-26 in the afternoon. The wind tomorrow will be strongest at Stevenson and gusty everywhere else.

On Friday, we’re back to light wind, and then on Saturday afternoon and Sunday, strong westerlies return to the Gorge.

Coming up this evening, there’s the Post and Pinot women’s mountain bike ride out of Dirty Fingers at 5:30, there’s Families at Family Man, with family-friendly bike riding for kids of all ages, there’s the Kayak Shed’s whitewater shop paddle and sailboat races out of the Hood River Marina. Ladies standup paddle night is tonight this week, due to bad weather last night and a return to summer today. Join Big Winds for free standup paddle demos and lessons at Hood River’s Event Site.

Also tonight, it’s the movie Rising from Ashes at Columbia Center for the Arts at 7:00. This is the bad-ass story of the Rwandan cycling team, headed to the Olympics this summer. You know the awful story of the Rwandan genocide. Come see this inspiring film about Rwandan cyclists.

Coming up this weekend, it’s a big one for organized bike rides, with the Cascade to Crown Ride out of Cascade Locks on Sunday and the Mt. Adams tour out of Trout Lake on Saturday. Also on Saturday, it’s the Splash for Pink on the Descutes River, raising money for breast cancer research by sending you whitewater rafting.

Have an awesome day today!
