Gorge Wind Forecast
Yesterday was a big day on the river, but if you weren’t able to make it, you’ll have another chance on Monday or Tuesday. Dynamic weather is the story for the next couple of days as low pressure moves around and about the Pacific Northwest. Onshore flow and unstable air is the result, along with westerly wind.
For Saturday, we’ll start with teens in most places with single digits from Hood River to Doug’s. With gradients at .04 and .07 early in the morning, the best bet for early wind will be 15-18 east of The Dalles. Rain moves into the western half of OR/WA early afternoon. In response, western Gorge wind drops to 5-10. Wind east of the rain, probably east of The Dalles, picks up to 19-23.
A broad area of low pressure across the inland Northwest on Sunday sets up light westerly flow and atmospheric instability. There may be just enough of a high offshore to have the wind beat the models. That said, afternoon rain wrapping around the low could shut it all day. Models suggest 10-13 from Stevenson to Hood River with 5-10 east of Hood River. It’s possible we’ll see 13-16 from Stevenson to Mosier for a period late morning. No guarantees. Afternoon thunderstorms look possible-to-likely in the west, so be prepared to exit the river on short notice.
Looking at Monday: models aren’t quite together on wind speed predictions, but they both keep the westerlies going. Morning westerlies of 12-15 from Stevenson to Mosier pick up to 22-25 or 25-29 (GFS) from Rowena to Rufus with 10-13 east and west of that stretch of river. Models are closer together on Tuesday, with both predicting 27-31 from Stevenson to Rufus. Finally, a Corridor day!

Saturday: NW20-25/NW15-20/30-35, NW swell 7′ at 9 seconds. Sunday: 5-10/5-10/30-35, NW 6′ @ 9. Monday: W5/W5/5-10, NW 4′ @ 8.

Partly cloudy sky this morning gives way to rain this afternoon. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and near 60 later. Moderate westerlies. 17% chance of rainbows. Sunday looks partly cloudy early with clouds, rain, and a chance of thunder in the afternoon and evening. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and low 70’s later with mugginess. Light west wind. 34% chance of rainbows. Monday looks partly cloudy early with more clouds and a chance of thunder in the evening. Muggy too. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and low 70’s later. Light to moderate westerlies. 35% chance of rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking
If you’re looking for Brown Pow, you’ll find it all over the place. Post is good. Knebal, 8-Mile, Bottle Prairie and Surveyor’s are “open with patches of snow”, according to 44 Trails Association. Logging has begun on Whoopdee, so the main loop is closed. Ronnoc trail will remain open, and so will the climb out. Other open trails: Post, Nestor, Columbia Hills, Hospital Hill, Dog River, Sandy Ridge, Syncline, and Falls Creek from the bottom. Lower Lewis River is open.
If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead any more as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new designated parking area. The cows are out on Hospital Hill, which happens to be private land owned by the Kreps family. Do not take your dog or you 1) endanger the life of your dog and 2) endanger access to the land for everyone.
Upcoming Events
Today’s events start with a trail run in Post Canyon at 8 and a road bike ride from Mountain View Cycles at 8:45. There are two trail work parties – one on the 180 trail in Post canyon meeting at Binn’s Hill at 9, and one on Surveyor’s Ridge meeting at Little John snopark at 9 – with the snow level around 5000′ today, you’ll want to dress warmly for that one.
Other goodies today – the Wrinkled Wranglers ride the Klickitat Trail from Pitt Trailhead leaving at 11:30. Lyle has Pioneer days. The annual catfish derby is at Rufus, and Ekone Ranch in Goldendale has an overnight open house and campout. Nothing going on tonight? Check out DJ Dr. Scott at The Logs in BZ at 9:30 tonight.
