When I wrote this forecast this morning, it was pouring in the Gorge. That should end pretty quickly today, with mostly not-raining weather all day. This week doesn’t look too bad for those of you who want to leave the confines of the gym: Other than Tuesday, it’s looking like a pleasant (if cold) week to play outside, with limited precipitation in the Gorge. Unfortunately, the ground is so wet we’ll probably have a fog layer, but that’s better than drenching rain!

If you feel the need to go windsurfing or kiting, head east today, for gusty west wind at 28-32 in the eastern Gorge. You might have another chance at the westerlies on Tuesday, but it might happen overnight.

Despite dire predictions by yours truly, the snow stayed snow on Mt. Hood all night, and there’s plenty of new on the ground this morning. The cold front is working its way through, and the precip rate will drop and the wind will pick up before 10am. Expect the snow level, around 4500′ this morning, to drop to 3000′ by 10am hold during the day and then rise to around 5000′ by 4pm. Around .3-.5” water value falls before 7am,. Another .1-.2” WV of orographic snow flurries falls, with sunbreaks during the day. Total snowfall after 7am will be 1-3”. Orographic snow showers continue tonight for another .3-.4” WV by Monday morning for 3-4” of new. The wind, at SW 15-25 early, will rise to WSW 40 by 9am today, rising further to 40-50 by 10am and holding all day. At least it’s not out of the NW…

Monday starts with snow flurries. The snow level will be 3000′ in the morning, rising to 4000′ by 1pm and 5000′ by 4pm. Snow flurries give .3-.4” WV during the day for 3-4” of new. Another .3” falls by 1am for another 2-3” of new. After 1am Tuesday, the snow switches to rain… more on that in a minute. Wind on Monday will be WSW 40-45 early, dropping to 35-40 midday and going to SW 20-30 around 4pm.

Tuesday morning sees the snow level rise dramatically from 6000′ at 1am to 9000′ at 4am. It will slowly drop during the day: 7500′ at 1pm, 6500′ at 4pm, and 6000′ by 10pm. Heavy rain starts around 1am, with 2-3” falling by 4pm. The heavy rain ends around midnight, and switches to snow showers, if we’re lucky… Wind on Tuesday will be SSW 30 at 1am, SW 50-70 at 4am, WSW 45-55 at 7am, with the wind holding in the 50ish range overnight.

The snow level drops to 5500′ by 1am Wednesday, and then plummets, hitting 2000′ by 4am and 1000′ by 7am. It looks like there will be some snow overnight, for a few inches of new on the rain-soaked snowpack. I’m really hopeful this happens, or we’ll be left with a mountain of blue ice. Light snow showers continue Wednesday, for no significant accumulation. Similar weather – low freezing level, light snow flurries, sunbreaks – continues through Saturday.

If you’d like to do a good deed today, there are two available, and with the rain intensity tapering off, you probably won’t get soaked. WTA and CAMBA have a trail work party at Syncline at 9am. The DimWits have a trail work party in Cascade Locks at 2pm-ish, followed by a night ride starting at 5pm (yes, night starts that early now). Also tonight, early beddy-bye for me.

If you want to play outside, today during the day should be okay. Not too wet

In today’s snow forecast, there’s snow. Well, flurries, anyway. The bulk of the precip has moved on. The snow level will be around 3500-4000′ this morning, holding through the day and rising to 5000′ around 7pm. Flurries and sunbreaks are the rule today with no significant accumulation. Heavy precip starts up again around 10pm… more on that later. Wind today will be SW 40-50 early, falling to 35-40 mid-afternoon and picking up to 45-50 overnight.

Now, back to tonight’s precip. The models suggest there will be a period of warmer weather between 10pm and 2am, with rain or freezing rain on the slopes, with snain the best possibility during those hours. That said, we’ll get .7-.8” water value (WV) overnight, but at best, it’ll fall as 3-4” of new snow by 4am Sunday.

The snow level will fall back to 4500′ by 4am Sunday, and slowly fall to 3500′ by 4pm. Snow falls all day, for .7” WV and 6-8” of new snow. It should be a nice day to hit the slopes, if you can stand the wind: SSW 30-50 early, rising to SW 50 by 7am and a somewhat destructive (but better than WNW) 50-55 by 1pm, holding for much of rest of Sunday.

Monday sees a break in the weather with clear to partly cloudy skies in the morning and scattered snow flurries with no significant precip until after 4pm. The wind will be WSW 45 early, slowly falling to SW 30-35 late in the afternoon.

Heavy, heavy rain starts around 1am, with the snow level rising to 8000′. 2-3” of rain fall during the day Tuesday. Wind will be SW 50-60 early, rising to 50-70 mid-morning. Around 7pm, the freezing level will drop to around 3000′, but precip will be pretty much done at that point. Cold, snow-showery weather makes up the next few days.
