Mt. Hood Snow Forecast – 5000′

The inversion layer is out in force this morning, blocking the view of the stars and moon and comets and nebulae and whatever else is up in the sky at this time. I’m hopeful the low clouds will burn off. Hopeful, but not predicting it even though models suggest the low clouds will dissipate later.

We’ll have east wind in the Gorge today. With a .18 gradient, 30+ is likely at Stevenson and Rooster. That’s pretty much it for useable wind this week. The rest of the week looks gusty, unreliable and rainy.

In “fun stuff to do this week” news, tonight is kayak polo, rugby under the lights, and Gary’s crochet club. Tomorrow night at 5pm is the HRC trails meeting at the OSU extension office. On Saturday at 9am, WTA and CAMBA have a work party at Syncline, and Saturday at 6pm the DimWits have a night ride (complete with bonfire) in Cascade Locks.

Up on Mt. Hood, clear skies this morning give way to high clouds at some point this afternoon, but no precipitation falls from the sky. Meadows plans to open Cascade today, weather permitting. The freezing level will be around 10,000′, falling to 8000′ overnight tonight. Wind will be W 10-20 early, swinging to SW 15-20 mid-morning and rising to SW 20-25 overnight.

Wednesday starts off cloudy, with the snow level at 8000′. It will fall to 7500′ by 10am and 6000′ by 4pm, and you know what that means: rain! Rain starts around 10am, with .6-.8” falling by 4pm. Then more showers fall overnight. Wind Wednesday will be SW 20-25 early, 25-30 midday and 40-45 in the afternoon.

Thursday brings more rain. Hooray! Rain! The snow level will be 7000′ early, falling to 6500′ by 7am and holding all day. Between 4am and 4pm, .7-.9” water value falls upon Mt. Hood. It’ll be rain down low and (maybe) snow up high. Another .2-.3” falls into Friday morning. Wind Thursday will be SW 30-35 for much of the day, rising just a bit to 35-40 overnight.

Friday sees the snow level at 6000′ early, falling to 5500′ in the afternoon. There will be a few snow flurries or rain showers early before skies become partly cloudy late. Wind will be SW 35-40 all day.

Saturday morning looks very wet, and likely too warm for snow at 5000′. Sunday morning looks borderline, but by Sunday afternoon, temps at 5000′ drop below freezing. Models are not agreeing on the Mon/Tues time frame.

Have an awesome day today!

If I were living in the Gorge, I would attempt to get outside today, despite the chill. I probably wouldn’t go windsurfing in 32 degree weather, although this morning’s E .21 gradient will give us easterlies at 35+ today. I might go for a bike ride today. As a matter of fact, I will go for a bike ride, because Mitchell insists the trails are in great shape. Maybe you should ride too? Tomorrow looks cloudier, but still dry, and you’ll still have a chance at east wind at 26-30 if that’s your thing. Rain starts back up in the Gorge midday Wednesday.

In events this week, there’s kayak polo and rugby under the light on Tuesday. Wednesday is the Hood River County Trails Committee meeting at 5pm at the OSU extension office. There’s a Syncline work party on Saturday (that’s for hikers and bikers and runners), and there’s a night mountain bike ride with the DimWits in Cascade Locks from 6-8pm on Saturday.

Today looks downright lovely on Mt. Hood, with sunshine (and maybe some high clouds) and temps warming above freezing. By mid-morning, it should be in the upper thirties or low forties between 5,000′ and 10,000′ or so. Wind will be SW 10-15 this morning, rising to 20-25 in the evening. No precip today.

Tuesday brings high clouds. The freezing level will be around 9000′ all day. Wind will be SW 20 in the morning, rising to 20-30 in the afternoon. No precipitation.

Wednesday starts off cloudy, with the freezing level at 8000′. It will lower to 7000′ by 1pm, to 6000′ briefly around 4pm, before rising to 6500′ overnight. Rain will start around 1pm, with .3” or so falling by 10pm when the rain should taper off. Wind on Wednesday will be S 15-20 early, 35-40 early afternoon, and 40-45 around 4pm before dropping to 20-30 overnight.

Thursday starts with cloudy skies and rain. The snow level will be 6000′ early, rising to 6500′ around 7am and holding all day. Approximately .4-.5” rain will fall between 4am and 4pm, with most of the rain happening early. Another .3” or so falls overnight Thursday into Friday morning. Wind Thursday will be SW 30-35 early, rising to SW 45-50 by 7am and slowly fading during the day.

Friday sees the snow level at 6-7,000′ with rain. Saturday sees the snow level at 5-6,000’+ with more rain. The snow level drops down to 3-4,000′ Sunday.

Have an awesome day today!
