Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Today’s General picture for the next four days: westerlies of some sort! Most of the time the wind will be gusty due to associated atmospheric dynamics, but you’ll definitely be able to get on the river and play if that’s your thing. Models diverge in predictions for the end of next week, leaving zero confidence in any forecast past Wednesday.

Saturday starts with low and mid-level clouds from a frontal system. With the clouds past Hood River, today’s steadiest wind will also shift east of Hood River, and that’s confirmed by the gradients: .07 pdx-dls and .09 dls-psc. Morning westerlies will be gusty 13-16 pretty much everywhere, with strong wind near Viento (as always) and Roosevelt (frontal passage thing). As the day goes on, we’ll see gusty westerlies at 16-19 from Stevenson to Hood River with gusty 23-26 from Mosier to Roosevelt. River flow is 143kcfs and temp is 69 degrees.

High pressure builds offshore and inland on Sunday. While the synoptic-scale models aren’t predicting wind for the Gorge, gut instinct says the westerlies will stick around. We’ll have 10-13 early from Stevenson to Hood River. It’ll take some time, but eventually the wind will build to 15-18 from Stevenson to Mosier.

A trough of low pressure over the ocean on Monday brings cooler temps to the western half of the state. Westerlies respond by picking up. Morning wind will be 20-23 from Viento to Mosier. Afternoon: 24-27 from Stevenson to Rufus. Tuesday’s forecast currently looks like gusty 24-27. After that… not much point in guessing due to differences in the models.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Coast (north/central/south, wind N unless otherwise specified). Saturday: 5-10/10-15/25-30, W swell 4′ at 9 seconds. Sunday: 20-25/20-25/30-35, W 3′ @ 9. Road and Mountain Biking

Red Hill Road is currently closed to cars due to logging. Folks have ridden it on bikes on the weekend, but ride at your own risk. Riorden Hill Road will close from pavement end to Family Man from August 1st to August 22nd. Industrial Fire Level is now Level II. Moto is allowed in Post Canyon still and on improved roads (rocked, no vegetation) in forests, but all other trails are closed to motorized use at this time.

All local trails are snow-free. The only unconfirmed trail I have right now is Huffman Peak. Apparently Boulder Lakes is quite overgrown. Mt. Margaret still has snow. Whoopdee is closed for logging, but Ronnoc trail and the climb out are open. Red Hill Road is supposedly closed for logging. Ride at your own risk. If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new parking area. The cows are off Hospital Hill!

Upcoming Events

It’s Saturday, and there’s a lot going on today. It’s the final day of the Hood Jam kiteboard contest at the Hood River Spit – the awards ceremony is tonight at Kickstand Coffee. Cascade Locks has one-design sailboat races today, Washougal motocross park has the Nationals, and Mt. Hood Meadows has both the Wy’East Howl ultramarthon with 100k, 50k, and half-marathon trail races. There’s also the much shorter Uphill Challenge footrace.

There’s an early morning, 7am, bird walk with Ken at Steigerwald Wildlife Refuge, and there’s a bat walk tonight at 8:30, not with Ken. Sorosis Park in The Dalles plays the movie Aquaman at dusk tonight, and if you stay up late enough, you should be able to catch some action from the Delta Aquarids meteor shower.
