Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Gorge Wind Forecast

Today’s Westerlies drop off on Sunday, but they won’t stay light for long. Stronger wind returns on Monday and sticks around for at least a few days. On Sunday, clear sky in Portland and matching afternoon temp predictions for the Gorge and Portland point towards a lighter day. Early gradients were .04 and .01, and there was a 1030mb high offshore. The GFS likes zero wind today, but the ECMWF and gut instinct point towards building westerlies. Let’s call it 11-14 from Stevenson to Moiser midday and 15-18 this afternoon. River flow is 98kcfs (not much at all) and temp is 69 degrees.

Pressures drop in the desert on Monday and combine with offshore high pressure for a stronger day. Dawn patrol wind looks like 18-21 from Viento to Mosier with 8-11 near Stevenson and Rowena. The wind builds to 22-25 by late morning from Stevenson to Moiser, filling in to Doug’s in the afternoon. It’s probably that the wind will drop off near Swell in the afternoon as well.

Low pressure moves towards Vancouver Island on Tuesday, introducing a little extra oomph and a little more gustiness into our wind. Morning westerlies will be gusty 22-25 from Viento to Moiser with 12-15 from Rowena to Roosevelt and also at Stevenson. The wind will build to 24-27 by early afternoon from Stevenson to Roosevelt. Models have been all over the place with Wednesday’s wind: yesterday it was 13-16. Today’s it’s 20-23. Not enough agreement is present beyond Wednesday to say anything other than … continued gusty westerlies.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Coast (north/central/south, wind N unless otherwise specified). Sunday: 15-20/15-20/30-35+, W swell 3′ at 9 seconds. Monday: 15-20/15-20/25-30, NW 5′ @ 7. Tuesday: 5-10/5-10/25-30, NW 3′ @ 8. Jones Sunday; 22-25. Monday: 22-25. Tuesday: 12-15. Sauvie’s Sunday: 12-15. Monday: 12-15. Tuesday: nope.

Road and Mountain Biking

Red Hill Road is currently closed to cars due to logging. Folks have ridden it on bikes on the weekend, but ride at your own risk. Riorden Hill Road will close from pavement end to Family Man from August 1st to August 22nd. Industrial Fire Level is now Level II. Moto is allowed in Post Canyon still and on improved roads (rocked, no vegetation) in forests, but all other trails are closed to motorized use at this time.

All local trails are snow-free. The only unconfirmed trail I have right now is Huffman Peak. Apparently Boulder Lakes is quite overgrown. Mt. Margaret still has snow. Whoopdee is closed for logging, but Ronnoc trail and the climb out are open. Red Hill Road is supposedly closed for logging. Ride at your own risk. If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new parking area. The cows are off Hospital Hill!
