Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Today’s A stellar sunny Thursday with a light wind start develops into a cloudy afternoon and cloudy Friday as a weak frontal system moves through. High pressure takes over on Saturday for a light wind day, and westerlies return on Sunday afternoon.

A large area of low pressure offshore this morning moves towards BC and sends a front inland late tonight. All that weather action will decrease the gradients and disrupt the wind field today and Friday. Wind will slowly build from 10-13 this morning to 13-16 early afternoon from Stevenson to Mosier. As the front moves closer to the coast last afternoon, westerlies rise to gusty 18-22 from Rowena to Rufus, holding at 13-16 in the west. River flow is 168kcfs, and temp is 69 degrees.

Friday starts out cloudy in the west with scattered sprinkles. With the clouds sticking around in the central Gorge all day, you’ll want to head east for the steadiest wind. Morning westerlies will be 8-11 or so from Stevenson to Hood River. Mosier to Roosevelt start the day at gusty, up-and-down 17-20. The weather system takes its sweet time moving out of the area, not doing the wind any favors. Afternoon westerlies rise to gusty 20-23 from Viento (maybe) to Rufus.

Remnants of that system stick around on Saturday morning before clearing the area in the afternoon. Despite building offshore high pressure, we probably won’t see all that much wind. Call it max 8-11 on Saturday with a chance of calm conditions. Sunday starts at 5-8 and picks up to 21-25 from Stevenson to Rufus in the afternoon. Make it a long weekend, because the wind continues Monday and Tuesday.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Coast (north/central/south, wind N unless otherwise specified). Thursday: S15-20/S15-20/LTW, W swell 2′ at 7 seconds. Friday: LTV/LTV/LTV, W 5′ @ 7. Saturday: 20-25/15-20/20-25, W 4′ @ 6. Jones Thursday: nope. Friday: 5. Saturday: 15-18. Sauvie’s Thursday: nope. Friday: nada. Saturday: 10-13.

Road and Mountain Biking

Riorden Hill Road is closed between the end of the pavement and Family Man. You will need to use a different staging area to access trails for the next few weeks. Red Hill Road is currently closed to cars due to logging. Folks have ridden it on bikes on the weekend, but ride at your own risk. Industrial Fire Level is now Level II. Moto is allowed in Post Canyon still and on improved roads (rocked, no vegetation) in forests, but all other trails are closed to motorized use at this time.

All local trails are snow-free. The only unconfirmed trail I have right now is Huffman Peak. Apparently Boulder Lakes is quite overgrown. Mt. Margaret still has snow. Whoopdee is closed for logging, but Ronnoc trail and the climb out are open. Red Hill Road is supposedly closed for logging. Ride at your own risk. If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new parking area. The cows are off Hospital Hill, which means your dog can come along.

Upcoming Events

Community activities today include pickleball at 5 at The Dalles Readiness Center. The race-pace Post n’ Pinot ride is at 5:30 at Dirty Fingers. At 6 today, there’s paddling practice at the Hood River Event Site, $5 yoga at Samadhi in White Salmon, free Tai Chi at Our Savior Church in Bingen, and at 6:30, there’s Zumba at Mid Valley Elementary in Odell. Closure of Riorden Hill Road between the end of the Pavement and Family Man starts today. In other words, you cannot access Post Canyon trails (or Family Man) from the bottom of Riorden Hill for a few weeks.

There’s lots going on this weekend. Starting Thursday, there are work parties in the Gifford Pinchot to build trail for the Trans-Cascadia Mountain Bike Race – visit that website for more information. The Bridge of the Gods Kitefest Blowout from Stevenson to Hood River will happen Saturday or Sunday (wind permitting – seems unlikely). The Renewal Workshop in Cascade Locks has their annual sale on Saturday, and there are free Scott mountain bike demos at Sandy ride Saturday.

There’s a “Restoration Celebration” at Steigerwald Wildlife Refuge on Saturday morning. Pacific Hermitage has a garden party and tea party and potluck starting at 10:30 Saturday. Saturday’s the grand opening of the Shellrock Mountain section of the I-84 bike path (ride from Cascade Locks at 9am, ceremony at 10am at Wyeth). The Watergun Fun Run is at Shortt Supply at 9:30 Saturday morning, and there’s a windsurfing race at the Event Site.
