Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Today’s A Hot and somewhat humid weather over the next few days results from a heat low over the west side, offshore high pressure, and another high over Nevada-ish. The resulting setup makes the wind difficult to predict precisely, but one thing is easy to say: not much wind for the weekend. Stronger westerlies return Monday or Tuesday, depending on when the heat low moves east.

For Saturday, morning gradients of .03 and .01 hint at light westerly flow today. The Gorge retains a slight edge on the heating. Let’s call it light westerlies at best, just from Stevenson to Moiser. River flow is 140kcfs, and river temp is 69 degrees.

Sunday’s also a tricky forecast, with models predicting light east wind that maxes out at 10-15 for a couple hours mid-morning between Stevenson and Viento. Before and after that, you can expect very light wind, perfect for the Tri Club’s morning swim to the buoy and back.

On to Monday… models have been backing off on the wind speed and climbing upwards on temps. As of this morning, it looks like we’ll see 17-20 from Stevenson to Moiser all day on Monday with high temps in the upper 90’s. That’s hair dryer wind. Models have been all over the place on wind speed for Tuesday and Wednesday. Current forecast is 25-29 on Tuesday and 30-35 on Wednesday.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Coast (north/central/south, wind N unless otherwise specified). Saturday: 20-25/20-25/25-30, W swell 3′ at 7 seconds. Sunday: 10-15/10-15/20-25. NW 2′ @ 6. Monday: 5-10/5-10/20-25. NW 3′ @ 7. Jones Saturday: 5-10. Sunday: 24-27. Monday: 26-29. Sauvie’s Saturday: 15-18. Sunday: 13-16. Monday: 10-13.

Hood River Weather Forecast

There’s a chance of instability over the HR Valley and Cascades for the next few days under southerly flow due to an inland high. We prefer southerly flow due to an offshore low – more moisture, more triggers, but it’s something to watch for if you’re in the mountains or growing cherries! Other than that… Saturday will be sunny. Temps will be near 60 early (open all the doors and windows) and near 90 later (close them). Muggy. Zero to light wind. No rainbows. Sunday looks sunny. Temps will be in the low 60’s early and mid 90’s later. Muggy early. Dry in the afternoon. Light east flow with calm wind near Hood River. No rainbows. Monday looks sunny and muggy. Temps will be in the mid 60’s early and upper 90’s later. Moderate westerlies. No rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

Riorden Hill Road is closed between the end of the pavement and Family Man. You will need to use a different staging area to access trails for the next few weeks. Red Hill Road is currently closed to cars due to logging. Folks have ridden it on bikes on the weekend, but ride at your own risk. Industrial Fire Level is now Level II. Moto is allowed in Post Canyon still and on improved roads (rocked, no vegetation) in forests, but all other trails are closed to motorized use at this time.

All local trails are snow-free. The only unconfirmed trail I have right now is Huffman Peak. Apparently Boulder Lakes is quite overgrown. Mt. Margaret still has snow. Whoopdee is closed for logging, but Ronnoc trail and the climb out are open. Red Hill Road is supposedly closed for logging. Ride at your own risk. If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new parking area. The cows are off Hospital Hill, which means your dog can come along.

Upcoming Events

Get out early if you’re playing outside today. Earliest on the schedule today is the lake restoration celebration at Steigerwald Wildlife Refuge in Washougal. The Renewal Workshop in Cascade Locks has their annual sale starting at 9, and there’s also a bike ride leaving Cascade Locks at 9am, headed for the grand opening of the new bike trail at Gorton Creek Trailhead at 10. Scott Bikes are available for free demoing at Sandy Ridge today. If it’s already hot at 9:30, try the self-explanatory watergun Fun Run at Shortt Supply in Hood River. Pacific hermitage in White Salmon has a garden party and work party today at 1pm, and the movie Guardians of the Galaxy plays at Sorosis Park in The Dalles at dusk.
