Gorge Wind Forecast
Today’s A It’s Sunday, and it’s another tricky windy forecast day. After today, flow switches to westerly, making for easier predictions. By the middle of the week, temps will start dropping, and the wind starts rising.
For sunday… while models are predicting east wind today, the early gradient between Portland and The Dalles was westerly (0.02). To be honest, I’m not quite sure what will happen, but with 5-8mph now in play for foiling, I’ll do my best! It does seem unlikely that gradients will switch, so I’m going with LTV, less than 5mph, for the first half of the day. Once the heat really sets in, my best guess is 4-7mph out of the west, Stevenson to Mosier, from 3pm on through the evening. 8-11 seems possible in Stevenson and/or Viento. Light east flow is the call all day east of The Dalles. River flow is 137kcfs, and temp is 70 degrees.
The heat low begins to shift east on Monday, setting up slightly stronger gradients. Morning wind looks like 7-10 from Stevenson to Swell with light wind out east. Afternoon westerlies pick up to 12-15 from Stevenson to Moiser. Our heat low friend gets clear of the Cascades on Tuesday. Morning wind will be 16-19 from Viento to Moiser with 5-8 everywhere else. Afternoon: 18-22 from Stevenson to The Dalles with 5-8 east of there.
Longer range forecast: 28-32+ on Wednesday and Thursday. Yay! One thing worth noting: atmospheric instability from upper-level south flow will come into play starting Monday and continuing through the week. That could impact the wind quality. Even so, there will be some strong wind out there for your playtime!
COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Coast (north/central/south, wind N unless otherwise specified). Jones Sunday: 24-27. Monday: 26-29. Tuesday: 26-29. Sauvie’s Sunday: 14-17. Monday: 13-16. Tuesday: 10-13. Coast Sunday: NW5-10/NW5-10/N25-30, S swell 1′ at 14 seconds. Monday: NW10-15/NW10-15/N25-30, S 1′ @ 15. Tuesday: NW5-10/NW10-15/N20-25, S 2′ @ 18.
Hood River Weather Forecast
Hot weather continues today, and things get muggier and only a little cooler the next few days. For Sunday, temps will be near 60 early and in the mid to upper 90’s late. Moderately muggy. Light and variable wind. No rainbows. Monday looks hot and increasingly muggy as the day goes on. Temps will be in the low 60’s early and upper 90’s later. Chance of thunder, especially over the Washington Cascades. Light west wind. No rainbows. Tuesday looks hot and muggy. Temps will be in the mid 60’s early and mid 90’s later. Moderate westerlies. Chance of thunderstorms. 1% chance of rainbows. Relief is in sight Wednesday, as temps are forecast to drop 10 degrees.

Road and Mountain Biking
Riorden Hill Road is closed between the end of the pavement and Family Man. You will need to use a different staging area to access trails for the next few weeks. Red Hill Road is currently closed to cars due to logging. Folks have ridden it on bikes on the weekend, but ride at your own risk. Industrial Fire Level is now Level II. Moto is allowed in Post Canyon still and on improved roads (rocked, no vegetation) in forests, but all other trails are closed to motorized use at this time.
All local trails are snow-free. The only unconfirmed trail I have right now is Huffman Peak. Apparently Boulder Lakes is quite overgrown. Mt. Margaret still has snow. Whoopdee is closed for logging, but Ronnoc trail and the climb out are open. Red Hill Road is supposedly closed for logging. Ride at your own risk. If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new parking area. The cows are off Hospital Hill, which means your dog can come along.
Upcoming Events
Today’s events include a couple of trail work parties – one at an undisclosed location in the Gifford Pinchot to prepare for the Trans-Cascadia Mountain Bike Race, and another on the Vista Ridge Trail. The Bridge of the Gods Blowout Race, originally scheduled for this weekend, has been postponed to next weekend.
Other goodies next week include a street dance in The Dalles on Friday night. Stevenson has the free waterfront music festival Friday and Saturday. There’s a horse show in Stevenson next Saturday, and Saturday’s also the Post Canyon 50k race. Don’t get too tired from tat one, because the Bridge of the Gods footrace is next Sunday. Meteors will be plentiful all week, but the peak of the Perseids is next Sunday and Monday.
