Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

It’s a partly cloudy Wednesday morning with scattered flurries on the hill. Those flurries leave this afternoon, giving the hill full-blow sunshine. Get that sun today and Thursday, because snow and much colder weather arrives on Friday night and sticks around through Saturday before we’re back to sunshine on Sunday.

Wednesday’s forecast has just a few flurries and mostly sunny weather. The snow level will be 4500′ early, 3000′ in the afternoon, and 1000′ overnight. Just a trace of new will fall. Wind: NW 20 all day, falling to NNW 15 after midnight. Thursday looks sunny all day. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 1000′ in the morning, 4000′ in the afternoon, and 3000′ overnight. Wind: NNW 15 early, NW 10 in the afternoon, and W 10 overnight.

Friday starts with high clouds ahead of an incoming low pressure system from Alaska. Snow starts up mid-afternoon and continues all the way through Saturday. The snow level is a bit up in the air (so to speak) at this time, but the difference is more about lowland conditions than mountain conditions. So… the snow level will be 3000′ Friday morning, 1500′ Friday afternoon, and 1000′ overnight. About 0.1” water value (WV) falls Friday afternoon, for an inch of new. Another 0.3” WV falls overnight, for 3-4” of powder. Wind: W 10 in the morning, SW 15-25 in the afternoon and overnight.

Saturday looks cold and snowy. The snow level will be 1000′ early and 0′ in the afternoon and overnight. Models have differing ideas of snow amounts. For now, let’s call it 0.3” WV during the day, for 3-4” of dry powder. Follow that with 0.1” WV overnight. 1” of new. Wind: SW 15-25 all day, SE 15 overnight. Sunday and Monday both look clear, very dry, and cold. After that, we see a slow warming trend with continued sunshine.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Westerlies will be around long enough on Wednesday to get you on the water if that’s what you want. The day starts with 19-22 out east and 17-20ish in the west. As a weak weather system moves through and leaves the area, westerlies rise to 22-26 from Stevenson to Biggs and hold through sunset. River flow is 125kcfs and temp is 41 degrees. Thursday’s a tricky forecast – strong offshore high pressure and models indicating east wind. Makes little sense. Let’s call it light and variable with a chance of W 10-13. Friday starts with W 7-10 and goes light and variable in the afternoon. The weekend forecast is currently E 40-50 both days with sub-freezing temps.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Detailed forecast is on winter break.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Mostly cloudy sky with scattered sprinkles starts Wednesday. The afternoon looks dry and partly cloudy. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and mid 50’s later. Moderate westerlies. 17% chance of rainbows. Thursday looks partly cloudy in the morning and sunny in the afternoon. Temps will be in the low/mid 30’s early and mid 50’s later. Light and variable wind. No rainbows. Friday starts with high clouds (and a colorful sunrise) and ends rainy, then possibly snowy overnight. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and upper 40’s in the afternoon. Light west wind goes light and variable in the afternoon. 1% chance of rainbows. Cycling

The latest report from Post, two days ago was “too muddy” due to freeze-thaw. Things may or may not be better there today after a warm and dry night last night. Syncline, Hospital, Ronnoc, and Nestor are all open. If you encounter freeze-thaw mud, please turn around. It’s tempting to finish your ride, yes, but you’ll do major trail damage. Also, I’ve been asked to refer you to Trailforks for current trail conditions. Please load that app on to your phone and use it!

Upcoming Events

Today’s events start with the White Salmon Fun Run, meeting at Harvest Market at 7am. There’s Zumba Gold at the Hood River Adult Center at 9 and senior yoga at FISH food bank at 10. Locals’ Wednesdays happen every week in downtown Hood River. Free parking after 3pm. Select businesses have specials.

Saturday is Pi Day. Shortt Supply has the 3.14 Fun Run at 9:30 am. Bring a pie if you are so inclined. I suspect this will be “weather permitting”, but perhaps not. The Upper Wind Whitewater Festival takes place in Stabler on Saturday. Ferment Brewing has a 5k Fun Run Saturday. Sunday is the “Glides of March” Strava race at Teacup, it’s Meadows’ Spring Demo Day, and it’s also “The Ruff”, a trail run race on Dog Mountain. Ouch. There are two free daylong meditation experiences this weekend at the Mt. Adams Zen Temple. Metta (lovingkindness) practice on Saturday, and a daylong silent retreat on Sunday.
