Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

After a ‘not much’ week on the mountain, we’re headed back to a couple days of snowfall before a return to sunshine. For Thursday, tho, expect a sunny day on Mt. Hood. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 1000′ early, 4000′ in the afternoon, and 2000′ after midnight. Wind: NW 15 in the morning, WNW 10-15 in the afternoon, and W 10 overnight.

Friday starts with high clouds and a shot at a colorful sunrise. Snow moves in during the afternoon and sticks around all night. The snow level will be 2000′ early, 1500′ in the afternoon, and 500′ after midnight. About 0.4” to 0.5” water value (WV) arrives with this system, for 4-6” of fluffy powder. Wind: W 10 in the morning, SW 10-15 in the afternoon, and SSW 15-25 after midnight.

Saturdays brings light snowfall in the morning, flurries in the afternoon, and partly cloudy sky overnight. The snow level will be 500′-1000′ all day, falling to 0′ overnight. About 0.1” to 0.2” WV falls during the day, for 1-3” of fluffy pow-pow. Just a trace falls in the evening and no more snow overnight. Wind will be SSW 10-20 early, SW 10-15 in the afternoon, and SE 20 overnight.

Partly cloudy weather Sunday morning turns sunny in the afternoon. The freezing level will be 0′. Wind will be SE 15-20 all day and E 30 after midnight. Monday looks sunny. The freezing level will be 500′ or so, but could rise to 5000′ if the sun is strong enough and warm air moves closer fast enough. By Tuesday morning, the freezing level will be 6000′, and we’ll be back to a freeze-thaw corn snow cycle on the mountain.

Gorge Wind Forecast

A vast shift in the weather is headed this way. Temps will drop, and the wind will shift to easterly starting late Friday. For Thursday, models predict light and variable wind, but offshore high pressure at 1035mb suggests that we could see westerlies. So does the morning gradient of .06. Let’s call it W 12-15 from Stevenson to Hood River with light wind east of there. Pure guesswork. Friday starts light and variable and turns to light easterly in the afternoon. Saturday brings easterlies at 30-40mph and Sunday looks like E 40-50.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Detailed forecast is on winter break.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Clear sky Thursday morning sticks around all day. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and mid 50’s later. Light west wind. No rainbows. Friday starts off with high cloud and a colorful sunrise. Drizzle moves in midday, and may switch to snow overnight. Depending on the arrival time of cold air, we could see a trace to 1” along the river and 1/2” to 2” on the Heights. Light and variable wind. 3% chance of early rainbows. Saturday brings snow flurries with a trace to 1” of new. Temps will be near 30 early and in the mid 30’s later. East wind. No rainbows. Sunday looks cold and partly cloudy with lows in the mid 20’s. See TATAS for more details.   Looking for a complete Columbia Gorge forecast? Looking for more humor in your weather? Obscenities? Cycling

The latest report from Post, two days ago was “too muddy” due to freeze-thaw. Things may or may not be better there today after a warm and dry night last night. Syncline, Hospital, Ronnoc, and Nestor are all open. If you encounter freeze-thaw mud, please turn around. It’s tempting to finish your ride, yes, but you’ll do major trail damage. Also, I’ve been asked to refer you to Trailforks for current trail conditions. Please load that app on to your phone and use it!

Upcoming Events

Today’s events start with the White Salmon Fun Run, meeting at Harvest Market at 7am. There are several Tai Chi classes at the Hood River adult center during the day. In the evening, there’s pickleball at 5 at The Dalles Readiness Center. There’s $5 yoga at Samadhi in White Salmon at 6, Tai Chi at Our Savior church in Bingen at 6, and Zumba at 6:30 at Mid-valley elementary. At 7am on Friday, there’s the Kickstand Coffee Run, where jogging or walking 4 miles gets you a free cup of coffee and a donut.

Saturday is Pi Day. Shortt Supply has the 3.14 Fun Run at 9:30 am. Bring a pie if you are so inclined. I suspect this will be “weather permitting”, but perhaps not. The Upper Wind Whitewater Festival takes place in Stabler on Saturday. Ferment Brewing has a 5k Fun Run Saturday. Sunday is the “Glides of March” Strava race at Teacup, it’s Meadows’ Spring Demo Day, and it’s also “The Ruff”, a trail run race on Dog Mountain. Ouch. There are two free daylong meditation experiences this weekend at the Mt. Adams Zen Temple. Metta (lovingkindness) practice on Saturday, and a daylong silent retreat on Sunday. Double check all of these events, as many gatherings have been canceled due to Covid-19.
