Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

For now, despite Kate Brown’s emergency declaration about large gatherings, ski season goes on. And if you’re into fresh snow, that’s a good thing, because freshies are on the way Friday night. Flurries continues on Saturday before a return to sunny and somewhat warmer weather next week.

For Friday, the day starts cloudy. A couple hours past sunrise, light snowfall arrives. It won’t stop until sometime Saturday. The snow level will be 1000-1500′ all day, 500′ in the evening, and 0′ near Mt. Hood overnight as cold air pours in from the east. About 0.2” water value (WV) falls during the day, for a couple inches of powder. Another 0.4-0.7” WV falls overnight, for 4-7” of additional light, fluffy snow. Wind will be SW 10-15 all day, becoming more southerly at S 10-20 overnight.

Snowfall continues during the day Saturday before tapering off overnight. The snow level near Mt. Hood will be 0′. Mountain temps will be in the low double-digits early and upper teens in the afternoon. About 0.3” WV falls during the day, for 3-4” of new snow. Just a trace falls under partly cloudy sky overnight. Wind: S 10-20 early, light southerly in the afternoon, and E 30 after midnight.

Sunday looks clear over some 5000′ clouds. The snow level will be 0′ with mountain temps in the upper single digits in the morning and upper teens in the afternoon. No precip. With the wind at E 30 mph, it’s going to be very chilly on the hill. Bundle up. Wind will be E 30 early and SE 15 in the afternoon and E 20-25 overnight.

Monday looks clear, sunny and warmer with the freezing level rising to 2000′. Tuesday sees a return to warmer weather with sunshine and an afternoon freezing level of 6500′. It looks like dry weather will continue for at least a couple days after that.

Gorge Wind Forecast

it’s about to get too cold to play on the river, but we’ll have a forecast anyway! Friday starts light and variable with light west gradient. It looks like afternoon wind will pick up to W 4-7 before turning easterly after midnight. Saturday starts with E 20-25 and stays that way all day. Sunday looks like E 40-45 in the morning with E 30-35 in the afternoon.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Detailed forecast is on winter break.

Cycling

The latest report from Post, two days ago was “too muddy” due to freeze-thaw. Things may or may not be better there today after a warm and dry night last night. Syncline, Hospital, Ronnoc, and Nestor are all open. If you encounter freeze-thaw mud, please turn around. It’s tempting to finish your ride, yes, but you’ll do major trail damage. Also, I’ve been asked to refer you to Trailforks for current trail conditions. Please load that app on to your phone and use it!

Upcoming Events

The Kickstand Coffee and donut run is every Friday – jogging 4.1 miles gets you a free cup of coffee and a donut. There’s a low cost ($5-$10) yoga class at Samadhi at 4pm.

Saturday is Pi Day. Shortt Supply has the 3.14 Fun Run at 9:30 am. Bring a pie if you are so inclined. I suspect this will be “weather permitting”, but perhaps not. The Upper Wind Whitewater Festival takes place in Stabler on Saturday. Ferment Brewing has a 5k Fun Run Saturday. Sunday is the “Glides of March” Strava race at Teacup, it’s Meadows’ Spring Demo Day, and it’s also “The Ruff”, a trail run race on Dog Mountain. Ouch. There are two free daylong meditation experiences this weekend at the Mt. Adams Zen Temple. Metta (lovingkindness) practice on Saturday, and a daylong silent retreat on Sunday. Double check all of these events, as many gatherings have been canceled due to Covid-19.
