Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

For the safety of all of you, Mt. Hood Meadows and Timberline have decided to do the prudent thing and shut down until at least the 22nd of March. Meadows has suspended their ‘no-hiking’ policy. Yes, you can earn turns. Remember that there is no patrol, grooming, avalanche control, or other assistance. As of this morning, Skibowl was planning to continue to operate (with less guests, they can easily create more social distance) from 12-8 daily. Teacup has shut down the cabin, but as of this morning plans to continue with their regular grooming schedule. If you are going there, please, please buy a pass or make a donation.

Mountain weather for the next few days will be exceedingly friendly with excellent corn snow in the afternoons. For Tuesday, the sky will be clear as a bell. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 7500′ early, 6000′ in the afternoon, and 1000′ overnight. Wind will be NE 10 during the day, light and variable in the evening, and NNE 10 overnight.

Wednesday looks clear as a jellyfish. The free air freezing level will be 1000′ in the morning, 4500′ in the afternoon, and 4500′ overnight. Wind: NNE 10 early, NE 10 in the afternoon, and light and variable overnight.

Thursday: sunny as a smiling baby and clear as the air on a Minnesota winter morning. FAF: 4500′ early, 5500′ in the afternoon, and 6000′ overnight. Wind: light and variable in the morning, SSW 10 in the afternoon, and light and variable overnight. Sunshine, clear sky, and an FAF of 6000′ is the forecast Friday. Some mid-level clouds may move in along with instability on Saturday, but not much will happen due to lack of moisture. In other words, no snow in the forecast, but epic corn snow hiking if you’re up for it!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Not much wind in the next few days gives you a chance for flat water paddling or perhaps a foil session. For Tuesday, expect widespread east 7-10 through the Gorge with E 17-20 from Rooster to Viento. The wind fades to light easterly in the afternoon. Wednesday starts with W 14-17 from Stevenson to Biggs. Afternoon wind: 14-17 from Stevenson to The Dalles with light westerlies farther east. On Thursday, we start with light westerlies. The wind goes calm in the afternoon. With temps in the upper 50’s, that’ll be perfect for a flat-water paddle.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Detailed forecast is on winter break.

Hood River Weather Forecast

The air quality is not-awesome this morning due to (probably) the easterly flow from the last few days and (probably) the coal-fired plant in Boardman. Anyway… temps will be in the mid to upper 20’s this morning and mid 50’s this afternoon. Light east wind. No rainbows. Wednesday will probably start with westerlies, which takes temps into the mid 30’s. Afternoon: mid 50’s. Moderate westerlies. No rainbows. Thursday: right at freezing in the morning. upper 50’s in the afternoon. Light and variable wind. No rainbows.   Looking for a complete Columbia Gorge forecast? Looking for more humor in your weather? Obscenities? You’re looking for my TATAS: Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service on Facebook.

Cycling

Temps dipped into the upper 20’s last night, which means that freeze-thaw conditions are going to come into play today. Please stay off any trails exposed to the open air – parts of Post, including but not limited to Mobius, Seven Streams, Kleeway. Syncline. Hospital Hill, especially the upper parts. Go ride Nestor – that’s in the trees! Other suggestions: ride on the gravel roads. Ride your road bike. But please, don’t ride through freeze-thaw, because the damage you do is permanent. And please gently educate people who’ve ridden through the mud.

Random Morning Thoughts

I received an email from a subscriber a couple days ago requesting that I encourage people to support local businesses through this crisis by pre-purchasing goods and services. This got me thinking about the bigger picture.

We’re a country that thrives on individualism and what’s known as the Myth of Meritocracy: you get ahead because you earned it. In a crisis like this one, the naked bones of that story are exposed. It’s just not true. Hard work plays a role, but a bigger percentage comes from initial conditions, luck, social connections, race, and other factors. Because of Covid-19, many people will suffer and struggle through no fault of their own.

I encourage you, if you are a person who has any extra, to share. See a neighbor lose a job? Help them financially. Own property? Consider rent or lease relief for struggling people and businesses. Buy gift certificates from local businesses to help with cash flow. Donate the refunds you receive from local events. Fear so often drives greed. Let’s let our communal concern spur generosity, compassion and thoughtfulness instead. May you be well and happy.

Have an awesome day!
