Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

As of this morning, Wednesday, Skibowl has decided to suspend operations due to Covid-19. Timberline announced yesterday that they will continue to evaluate the situation, but will not reopen on March 23 as originally planned. Meadows had not updated their blog as of this morning. Teacup will continue to groom, but they have announced that there will be no Ski Patrol on site. If you are going there, please, please buy a pass or make a donation. Support them generously for being available for all of us!

Of course, earning your turns is always an option, and there will be stellar corn snow this week for you. For Wednesday, expect a few high clouds in the morning with sunshine for most of the day. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 4000′ all day and will rise to 5000′ overnight. Wind: NE 5-10 becoming light and variable overnight.

Thursday looks sunny as can be. The FAF will be 5000′ in the morning and 6000′ in the afternoon. Wind: light and variable for the 24 hour period. Friday starts out sunny. Some clouds move in at the 7000-8000′ level in the afternoon, but nothing falls from them, most likely. The FAF will be 6000′ all day, dropping to 5000′ overnight. Wind: light and variable early, NW 10 in the afternoon, and W 10 overnight.

If we look at the weekend, we see another round of sunshine on Saturday and Sunday. Snow is in the forecast on Monday, but models are far from agreeing on the amounts or timing. With all this beautiful weather in the forecast, it will be a lovely time for a snowshoe or BC ski. Get out and get some fresh air and take your mind off everything else that’s going on!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Gorge wind for the next few days will be more conducive to flat-water paddling, para-gliding, and road biking than to windsports. But hey, it’s all good, right? And it’s all especially helpful in maintaining sanity and health right now! For Wednesday, we start with very light west wind. Light westerlies at 3-10 continue most of the day, picking up to W 10-13 after 5pm . River flow is 112kcfs and temp is 41 degrees. Brrrr! Thursday starts with light west wind and turns to light easterlies. By “light”, I mean 5mph or less. Friday starts calm and stays that way for most of the day. In the afternoon, the wind picks up to W 10-13. There are some hints in some of the model runs for a stronger westerly day on Sunday, but they’re far from agreeing.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Detailed forecast is on winter break.

Hood River Weather Forecast

It seems to be mostly clear, maybe with some high clouds this morning. Sunshine will be around all day. Temps will be near freezing early and in the upper 50’s later. Light west wind. No rainbows. Thursday starts just above freezing and ends close to 60 with sunshine all day. Light west wind early. Light east wind later. No rainbows. Friday looks sunny as can be most of the day with partly cloudy sky in the afternoon. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and low 60’s later. Calm wind most of the day with light westerlies in the afternoon. No rainbows. Next rainbows: Monday.   Looking for a complete Columbia Gorge forecast? Looking for more humor in your weather? Obscenities? You’re looking for my TATAS: Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service on Facebook.

Cycling

Temps dipped into the upper 20’s last night, which means that freeze-thaw conditions are going to come into play today. Please stay off any trails exposed to the open air – parts of Post, including but not limited to Mobius, Seven Streams, Kleeway. Syncline. Hospital Hill, especially the upper parts. Go ride Nestor – that’s in the trees! Other suggestions: ride on the gravel roads. Ride your road bike. But please, don’t ride through freeze-thaw, because the damage you do is permanent. And please gently educate people who’ve ridden through the mud.

Random Morning Thoughts

I received an email from a subscriber a couple days ago requesting that I encourage people to support local businesses through this crisis by pre-purchasing goods and services. This got me thinking about the bigger picture.

We’re a country that thrives on individualism and what’s known as the Myth of Meritocracy: you get ahead because you earned it. In a crisis like this one, the naked bones of that story are exposed. It’s just not true. Hard work plays a role, but a bigger percentage comes from initial conditions, luck, social connections, race, and other factors. Because of Covid-19, many people will suffer and struggle through no fault of their own.

I encourage you, if you are a person who has any extra, to share. See a neighbor lose a job? Help them financially. Own property? Consider rent or lease relief for struggling people and businesses. Buy gift certificates from local businesses to help with cash flow. Donate the refunds you receive from local events. Fear so often drives greed. Let’s let our communal concern spur generosity, compassion and thoughtfulness instead. May you be well and happy.

Have an awesome day!
