Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

As of this morning, Friday, we have a couple updates. Teacup will continue grooming Monday, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. If you are going there, please, please buy a pass or make a donation. Support them generously for being available for all of us! Meadows will also be grooming Nordic on Monday and Friday. I just sent them an email asking them to consider Tuesday, because Teacup already grooms Monday. If you are a Nordic skier and think that would be helpful to you, send them an email as well. Also thank them for recognizing that Nordic skiing naturally creates social distancing! As of this morning, there is no word yet on the return of lift-serve skiing.

Mountain weather: perfect for spring skiing and hiking. For Friday, it’ll be sunny most of the day with developing afternoon clouds. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 6000′ all day long. Wind will be light and variable. Saturday also looks sunny and brilliant. The FAF will be 6000′. Wind will be NW 15 in the morning, NW 5 in the afternoon, and W 10 overnight.

Sunday looks sunny too! FAF: 6000′ early, 6500′ in the afternoon, and 1000′-1500′ overnight. Wind: W 10 in the morning, SW 20-30 in the afternoon and evening. Light snow returns on Monday with the snow level at 1500-2000′. About 3” are forecast during the day with another 3” overnight. Additional snow is forecast Tuesday with the snow level around 1500-2000′. If you enjoy Nordic skiing, send teacup and Meadows your thanks!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Not much is happening in the way of strong easterlies or strong westerlies, but we’ll sure have some periods of strong light-and-variable-ies. For Friday, we start with LTV and little to no gradient. The wind picks up to light westerly, perhaps 4-7, after 1pm. Saturday starts with W 10-13 form Stevenson to Swell and picks up to 15-18 from Stevenson to Mosier. Sunday starts with light west wind in the 3-7 range. Afternoon westerlies: gusty 22-25 from Stevenson to The Dalles, perhaps just enough for your first downwinder of the season. River flow Friday is 171kcfs and temp is 41 degrees.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Detailed forecast is on winter break.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Mostly clear sky this morning stays that way until late afternoon when somewhat unstable air may fire off some cumulus clouds. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and mid 60’s later. Light and variable wind most of the day with light westerly later. No rainbows. Saturday looks sunny. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and mid 60’s later. Light to moderate westerlies. No rainbows. Sunday looks sunny. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and low 60’s in the afternoon. Moderate westerlies. No rainbows. Starting Monday we’ll be back in a cloudy-drizzly-colder pattern.   Looking for a complete Columbia Gorge forecast? Looking for more humor in your weather? Obscenities? Cycling

Under social distancing guidance, “short periods of outdoor exercise” are allowed. Let’s be smart about it, people. If you’re going cycling, practice social distancing – at least 6 feet between you and others, and don’t ride in groups (Dirty Fingers has canceled all their group rides). As for the dirt, I’m sure it’s great in most places. Enjoy! The wildflowers are blooming out there too, so enjoy the road riding.

Random Morning Thoughts

I received an email from a subscriber a couple days ago requesting that I encourage people to support local businesses through this crisis by pre-purchasing goods and services. This got me thinking about the bigger picture.

We’re a country that thrives on individualism and what’s known as the Myth of Meritocracy: you get ahead because you earned it. In a crisis like this one, the naked bones of that story are exposed. It’s just not true. Hard work plays a role, but a bigger percentage comes from initial conditions, luck, social connections, race, and other factors. Because of Covid-19, many people will suffer and struggle through no fault of their own.

I encourage you, if you are a person who has any extra, to share. See a neighbor lose a job? Help them financially. Own property? Consider rent or lease relief for struggling people and businesses. Buy gift certificates from local businesses to help with cash flow. Donate the refunds you receive from local events. Fear so often drives greed. Let’s let our communal concern spur generosity, compassion and thoughtfulness instead. May you be well and happy.

Have an awesome day!
