Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

We are still on track for ginormous snowfall amounts along with full-on storm skiing starting Friday and continuing at least through Sunday, possibly into Monday! Get ready for winter to get here, and then get ready for extremely cold temps on the mountain next week.

For Wednesday, snowfall continues. The snow level drops to 1000′ or so by the afternoon. During the day, about 0.4” water value (WV) falls, for 4-6” of fluffy powder. Another 0.3” WV falls overnight, for 3-4” of additional snow before the sky clears. Wind will be W 40 in the morning, W 30 in the afternoon, and NW 15-20 overnight. Thursday’s your day for sunshine on the mountain, unless orographics can pull enough moisture for a few clouds and flurries. The free air freezing level will be 1000′ during the day and will drop to 500′ or so overnight. No precip. Wind will be NW 30 early, WNW 15 in the evening, and SW 15 after midnight.

Snow starts up around 7am on Friday morning and doesn’t stop for a long, long time. A low pressure system drops in from the NW, pulling warmer, wetter air in from the south. The snow level will be about 5000′ at the start of this system. Temps drop in the afternoon, taking the snow level down to 4000′ in the evening and 2500′ after midnight. Ready for the precip totals? Okay! About 1.0” WV+ falls during the day, for 8-11” of new snow. Another 1.4” WV falls overnight, for 12-16” of new. Extremely strong westerly wind in the evening could increase those totals by 20-30%. Now, the wind. It will be SW 15 early, but will quickly climb: W 30 mid-morning, WSW 40 below treeline (60+ above), early afternoon, and a very disruptive W 60 in the evening. That will likely stop lifts. The wind drops to W 40 after midnight.

Storm skiing continues on Saturday. The snow level will be 2500′ early and will drop to 1000′ or so by the afternoon. Approximately 1.7” WV is forecast during the day, for 15-19” of new snow. Take a shove so you can dig your car out of the parking lots at the resorts. Another 0.7” WV is forecast overnight. That’s 7-9” of powder. Wind will be W 40 during the day, WNW 45 in the afternoon, and W 40 after midnight.

On to Sunday… The snow level will be 1000′ early, 2500′ in the afternoon, and then depending on the track of the next system, as low as 0′ overnight. Models are all over the place, so all this is a bit of guesswork. Let’s just say another foot to foot-and-a-half of snow will fall. Wind: W 40 early, W 55 in the afternoon (disrupting lifts) and NW 35 overnight. Looking into next week, temps drop precipitously. Other details are not yet clear. However, one thing’s for sure – the snowpack will be sitting pretty after this weekend, and you’ll have a big smile on your face if storm skiing is your thing!

Gorge Wind Forecast

West wind opportunities abound this week. If you’re going to try it, do it with a buddy – river temp is 42 degrees. The day starts with W 20-26 from Stevenson to Viento with 12-16 central Gorge and 16-19 east of The Dalles. The wind steadies out a little midday, dropping to 12-15 in the west and rising to 24-28 east of the Dalles. That wind will die off after 1pm, so drive early. Thursday starts with W 10-13 everywhere. The wind picks up to 23-26 from Stevenson to The Dalles by late morning, holding. Friday looks light and variable. We seem to be on track for a heck of a westerly day, 30-35mph, on Saturday. Predicted high temps are in the low 40’s.
