Mt. Hood Weather Forecast
Snow flurries Monday morning quickly give way to clear sky. A gorgeous sunrise on Tuesday (if the timing is just right) gives way to snow in the afternoon and evening then mixed precip overnight. With a westerly atmospheric river and jet stream headed at Mt. Hood from Tuesday on through Friday morning, temps will be right on the edge for a rain-snow mix for Mt. Hood. Models disagree, but rain and significant icing are more likely than three days of snow. For Monday, expect a cold and sunny day after a few morning flurries. The snow level will be 500-100′ during the day, dropping to 0′ under clear sky overnight. Just a trace of snow will fall. Wind will be NW 20-25 all day. It drops to NW 15-20 overnight.
Tuesday starts clear, but high clouds move in around sunrise for a good shot at a spectacle of color in the sky. Snow moves in around 1pm, becoming heavy in the evening and probably switching to mixed precip after midnight. The snow level will be 500′ early, 3500′ around midnight, and 5500′ after midnight. Just a trace of snow falls before 4pm. Overnight, about 0.8” water value (WV) falls on the mountain. Let’s call it 4-5” of snow and 0.4-0.5” rain or mixed precip. Wind: NW 15-20 through 4pm. After that, a steady build to NW 55 by Wednesday morning. That’s wickedly strong, and is going to lead to significant icing on lifts.
Wednesday looks very windy with mostly rain. 850Mb temps will fluctuate between 0C and 2C during the day and 0C and 4C overnight. This gives us a snow level of 5500′-7000′. Given the 850mb model’s temp predictions, I’m hesitating to say “all rain”, although that’s what the sounding model predicts. Let’s call it “no accumulation of snow” at 5000′ and look at the precip totals: 1.4” WV during the day. 2.0” overnight. That’s a lot of rain or alternating rain/snow! Wind: total shutdown for the higher ski areas with NW 55 nearly, NW 60 for the bulk of the daylight hours, NW 50 in the evening, and WNW 45 after midnight.
Orographic rain continues on Thursday. The snow level will be 6000′ early. Temps will bounce around in the afternoon leading to a mix of snow, rain, and freezing rain with the snow level between 5000′ and 8000′. After midnight, the snow level drops to 6000′. As of today, the GFS predicts 0.8” WV during the day and 1.4” overnight. Let’s just say no accumulation at 5000′, unless you count icing. Wind: WNW 45 in the morning, NW 60 in the afternoon (shut down!), and NW 45 after midnight.
A cloudy start to Friday gives way to sunshine in the afternoon. It then appears we’ll see snow on the weekend. Definitely going to be a wild ride for the mountain this week. Get it Monday and Tuesday for the best results!
Gorge Wind Forecast
West wind starts at 5-10 on Monday morning. It picks up to 15-18 this afternoon from Stevenson to The Dalles. Tuesday starts with light westerlies. The wind picks up to W 8-11 everywhere in the afternoon. Wednesday starts with gusty W 25-30 from Viento westward and east of The Dalles. It appears the wind will stay that way all day, but will only pick up to 5-10 (or less) in the central Gorge. Thursday looks similar.COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Detailed forecast is on winter break.
Hood River Weather Forecast
Mostly cloudy sky with some drizzle early appears to be making freezing rain due to radiational cooling. That should quickly switch to drizzle and then full sun as temps rise from the mid 30’s to the low 40’s. Moderate west wind. 28% chance of morning rainbows. Tuesday looks sunny to start with high clouds moving in quickly. If the timing is just right, a spectacular sunrise will result. Temps will be in the mid 20’s early and upper 30’s later. Precip moves in around 4pm, maybe starting as wet snow. As the precip rate increases in the evening, snow may stick down to river level… trace to 2” of wet goo. Light west wind. No rainbows. Wednesday starts out with drizzle, turns rainy, and stays drizzle all the way through Thursday. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and upper 40’s later. Light westerlies near Hood River. 89% chance of rainbows. 99.99% chance of rainbows farther east, including doubles. Looking for a complete Columbia Gorge forecast? Clear sky on Monday will make the trails tempting. Please don’t. Sub-freezing temps on Monday morning will lead to a vicious freeze-thaw cycle Monday and Tuesday. If you ride, you’ll be riding on liquefied tread, and you will do major damage to the trails. Even if you’re on a fat bike. Those large tires, low pressure or not, will also do trail damage. Go grind some gravel or ride on the road to enjoy the sun instead!Upcoming Events
Monday events include Zumba Gold at the Hood River Adult Center at 9am. There’s Meditation and Metta with the Trinity Sangha at noon, advanced Tai Chi at the Hood River Adult Center at 1pm, and beginner/intermediate Tai Chi at 2:30 at the Adult Center. Samadhi in White Salmon has $5 yoga at 6pm and Mid-Valley Elementary hosts Zumba at 6:30.
