Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Tuesday starts off clear, cold, and sunny. Get that gentle weather today, because it won’t return until sunday. We’re headed into a two day stretch of rain accompanied by very strong wind. After that: two days of storm skiing with snowfall.

So, Tuesday. Sunshine starts the stay, but high clouds quickly move in, hopefully just with the right timing for a pretty sunrise. Light snowfall starts up around 1pm, continuing through about 1am when the snow will switch to rain. The snow level will be 0′ early, 1000′ in the afternoon, 1500′ in the evening, 4000′ around 1am, and 6000′ after that. Just a trace of snow falls before 4pm. That’s followed by 0.3” water value (WV) of snow that gets increasingly dense. Call it 2-3”. Snow switches to rain, with 0.5” WV mixed precip falling between 1am and 4am Wednesday. Wind will build and build: NW 15-20 during the day, WNW 30-35 in the afternoon, and NW 50-55 from the evening onward.

Wednesday looks rainy and very windy with a chance of periods of snow or freezing rain as upper air temps fluctuate between 0C and 4C. The snow level will be 6000′ early, 9500′ in the afternoon, and 6000′ after midnight. About 2.0” WV falls during the day. Snow accumulation is unlikely at 5000′. Another 1.1” WV falls overnight. Again, no accumulation. Wind will likely shut down most of the lifts, if not all of them, at least at T-Line and Meadows: NW 55 early, NW 65 in the afternoon, NW 50 overnight.

If you liked that, you’ll like Thursday. Upper air temps will be 0-2C, meaning we’re more likely to see periods of alternating snow and rain (and significant icing on lifts). The snow level will be 6000′ during the day, 5000′ briefly in the afternoon, 7000′ in the evening, and 6000′ after midnight. About 1.0” WV falls during the day. 5000′ could see an inch or two of wet snow intermixed with all the rain. Another 1.4” WV falls as rain overnight. Wind will be NW 50 in the morning, WNW 50 in the afternoon, WNW 60 in the evening, and NW 55 overnight. Again, that’s shut-down strength wind speed and direction.

Looking at Friday, 5000′ temps drop from 0-2C in the morning to 0 to -2C in the afternoon. That takes the snow level from 6000′ to 4000′, and then down to 3000′ overnight. About 0.8” WV falls during the day, for 4-7” of increasingly dry snow. Another 0.4” WV falls overnight, for 4-5” of standard-quality snow. Wind will be NW 55 early, NW 40 around sunrise, W 25 in the afternoon, and W 45 overnight. That qualifies as “storm skiing.” Same on Saturday as 1.6” WV falls during the 24 hours period along with W wind at 45mph and the snow level around 2500′. If the forecast holds, expect 14-18” of new with slow-running lifts. Sunday’s forecast is currently cool, dry and sunny, for an epic bluebird day.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Tuesday starts off with light westerlies at 5-15 or so in the western Gorge. Morning wind will hold at 10-13 from Stevenson to Mosier or so. Afternoon wind picks up to gusty 14-17 from Rowena to Biggs, maybe to Arlington. Wednesday will be a rainy day. Strong westerlies at 20-30 in the far west stick around all day. Central Gorge wind, Swell to Doug’s, picks up to gusty 18-23 midday, and the eastern Gorge picks up to gusty 25-29. Thursday looks similar, so I”ll not repeat all that. The one difference is that it appears the wind will fill in to gusty W25-30 all the way from Rooster Rock to Boardman after 1pm. Friday looks like W 7-10.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Detailed forecast is on winter break.

Hood River Weather Forecast

High overcast sky this morning gives way to light snow or snow mixed with rain this evening. It probably won’t stick to the roads at river level, but the Heights could see 1-3” tonight before a switch to rain around 10pm. Temps will be in the upper 20’s early and upper 30’s later. Light to moderate westerlies. No rainbows. Wednesday looks rainy. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and upper 40’s later. Moderate to strong westerlies. 99.99% chance of rainbows. Thursday also looks rainy with strong westerlies. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and low 50’s later. Strong westerlies. 99.99% chance of rainbows. Rain continues Friday and Saturday. Next dry day: Sunday.   Looking for a complete Columbia Gorge forecast? Looking for more humor in your weather? Obscenities? Road and Mountain Biking

Dry weather today will make the trails tempting. Please don’t. Sub-freezing temps on Monday morning will lead to a vicious freeze-thaw cycle Monday and Tuesday. If you ride, you’ll be riding on liquefied tread, and you will do major damage to the trails. Even if you’re on a fat bike. Those large tires, low pressure or not, will also do trail damage. Go grind some gravel or ride on the road to enjoy the sun instead!
