Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

It’s Thursday, and the warm, wet, and windy weather will continue for another 24 hours or so on Mt. Hood. It’s unlikely lifts will run on Thursday; upper-elevation gusts are over 100 mph. We’ll see the rain switch back to snow late morning Friday. Heavy snow and strong wind Friday night may shut down the mountain at some point, but it could also result in epic storm skiing. Dumping snow and storm skiing continue on Saturday. Your chance for sunshine on the hill starts sunday and continues for at least a few days.

As I said above, lifts are unlikely for Thursday. Rain continues all day long, and so does very strong NW wind. The snow level will be about 6000′, leading to icing on lifts too! After midnight, the snow level rises to 7500′. About 1.7” rain, perhaps mixed with freezing rain or wet snow, falls during the day followed by another 1.7” rain overnight. Wind: shutdown strength! Averaging NW 50-55 all day and all night with gusts to 100mph at 8000′.

Friday brings another round of wind,, but the rain will switch to snow mid-morning. The snow level will be 7500′ early, 5500′ mid-morning, 4000′ in the afternoon, and down to 1000′ after midnight as a cold front barrels in. About 1.0” water value (WV) falls before the snow level drops mid-morning, for an inch of rain that turns to snow. Another 0.3” WV falls as snow in the afternoon, for 2-3”, Overnight, about 0.7” WV arrives in the form of 5-7” of increasingly dry snow. Wind: NW 55 early, W 40-45 daytime (lifts should run at that wind speed), W 60 in the evening (bye-bye lifts), and W 50 overnight. Given the wind strength, snow quality could be lessened.

Saturday looks snowy and windy. The snow level will be 1000-1500′ , falling to 500′ after the precip ends overnight. About 1.0” WV falls during the day, for 10-12” of dry powder. Just an inch of snow falls overnight before the sky clears. Wind will be W 50 in the morning (slowing most lifts and stopping some), NW 40 in the afternoon, NW 30 in the evening, and NE 20 overnight.

Sunday looks clear and sunny with low humidity. The freezing level will be 500′ early, 2500′ in the afternoon, and 6000′ overnight. Wind: NE 20 during the day, NE 15 in the evening, and NNW 10 overnight. Monday also looks clear, sunny and dry with low humidity, but 5000′ temps will rise above freezing as the freezing level climbs to 7500′. Looks like we’ll see a couple more days of dry weather after that before active weather returns.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Very big gradients and strong, gusty westerlies greet daybreak on Thursday. The western Gorge, west of Hood River, will have rain and gusty 30-35 today. Morning wind will be gusty 18-25 from Swell eastward early, filling in at gusty 30-35 from Stevenson to Arlington after noon. It’s likely rain showers will impact wind quality west of Mosier. Head to the sun for the best results. River flow is 188kcfs and temp is 39 degrees. Play with a partner and keep them in sight.

Friday starts with W 20-25 west of Viento and east of The Dalles. the wind fills in to 13-16 from Stevenson to The Dalles mid-morning with 18-22 east of The Dalles. If you’re looking for a windy weekend day, Saturday is it. The current forecast is gusty 20-30 all day in the west. East of Mosier, expect 28-32 to start with 32-38 in the afternoon all the way from The Dalles to Boardman. Sunday starts with light westerlies and switches to light easterlies.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Detailed forecast is on winter break.
