The best wind forecast for the Gorge. The best snow forecast for Mt. Hood. The best weather forecast for the Gorge.

Meet Temira, your Gorge Forecaster

Temira (they/them) has been exploring and playing in the Gorge since 1997 – starting out as a windsurfer, then expanding into kiting (briefly!), mountain biking, winging, gravel biking, SUP foiling and even extreme gardening! With all that experience, they understand the importance of a reliable forecast. In 2009, frustrated by the lack of accurate forecasts, Temira took matters into their own hands. What began as a daily email chain between friends (Laura Green, Dave Brown, and Temira) quickly grew into a full-blown website and subscription email service.

So, why The Gorge is my Gym? Because Temira doesn’t need a traditional gym – and neither do you. The Gorge is our gym! But this blog isn’t just about Temira’s adventures; it’s about helping all of you make the most of your limited free time. Whether you’re on the snow, in the river, or on the dirt, this forecast is here to help you have fun.

Each forecast takes time – sometimes up to a couple of hours a day – and maintaining the website costs money. So do the forecast model subscriptions that provide the information underlying this forecast. If you’ve found this service helpful, consider making a contribution or signing up for the (mostly) daily email. Gorge Wind Forecast

a graphical representation of today’s wind forecast

Hi friends! Models have nudged the wind strength upward for today (Wednesday), and they have a big east wind day on tap for Friday. A rather wet, but not-so-windy, weekend gives way to a chance of moderately strong to strong westerlies in the eastern Gorge on Monday. Maybe. This time of year, when the weather is this active, the forecast can change a lot from day to day!

Let’s look more closely at today. A weak low moves inland, and high pressure builds in behind it. By evening, that high pressure will push inland and potentially nudge the wind down west of The Dalles. But that’s later. For the morning, we’ll see the wind build to 20-23 from Viento to Mosier with 17-20 at Stevenson, the Rowena area, and Avery. Afternoon wind rises to 20-23 from Stevenson to Mosier, 26-30 from Lyle to Rufus, and 23-26 at Arlington. As that high pressure pushes inland and the low moves east to Idaho mid afternoon, Threemile joins at 23-26 and areas west of Lyle drop to 13-16. River flow over the last 24 hours was 63-91kcfs, river temp is 61.34F, and high temp forecast is merely 55F under partly cloudy sky in the west and clear sky out east.

Thursday starts with light west wind, perhaps10-13mph from Viento to Swell. The wind goes calm mid-morning and turns easterly in the afternoon. You’ll find 17-20 at Iwash (Rooster) Rock, 14-17 at Stevenson and Home Valley, and 10-13 at Viento. From Hood River eastward, easterlies pick up to 5-10mph. High temp: 57F under partly high overcast sky.

Venmo

Much stronger easterlies are in the cards for Friday; morning wind will be 40mph near Iwash, 30-35 at Stevenson, and 20-25 at Viento. The wind slowly fades after noon and lands here late afternoon: 30mph at Iwash, 20mph at Stevenson, and 15mph at Viento. High temp: 57F under mostly clear sky.

Extended: Saturday looks like a light/variable day as a weather system moves in and drops rain on the west side. A much wetter, but still not-so-windy day is in the cards for Sunday. We could see westerlies in the teens in the afternoon, but we’re also going to see a lot of rain. Models take a low inland on Monday and rebuild the high offshore. This sets us up for a windy, chilly eastern Gorge day. Models show a lot of range on the possibilities for wind strength, so don’t pencil it in quite yet. Have a great day today!

Gorge Wind Forecast

a graphical representation of today’s wind forecast

Hi friends! The long slow slide into winter continues. Your best chances to get on the river over the next several days will be Wednesday for westerlies and Friday for easterlies. Looking at the weekend, we see a lot of wet. The GFS deterministic really wants a nuker sometime between late Sunday and Monday, but the Euro is only 20% on board with that scenario. My fingers are crossed that the GFS is right so you can get that eastern Gorge day you’ve been wanting!

But you won’t get an eastern Gorge day on Tuesday. As a matter of fact, you’ll be best served by dock starting or planting garlic or anything else that doesn’t require wind. From Swell City eastward the wind will be light/variable all day. Stevenson and Viento pick up to E 10-13 mid-morning for a few hours. River flow over the last 24 hours was 63-89kcfs, river temp is 61.70F, and high temp is 60F.

A weak low moves inland on Wednesday, and high pressure coalesces offshore. The combo of the two gives us a west wind day, and perhaps a day where reality beats the models. It looks right on the edge for surprise territory. The day starts with 11-14 from Viento to Swell. By late morning, the wind builds to 17-20 from Stevenson to Swell with 24-27 from Lyle to Arlington. Models hint at a late-day jump to 20-23 from Stevenson to Swell. Maybe. The best zone on Wednesday is pretty clearly Mosier to Rufus. High temp will be in the mid 50s after a 30-something start. Cold!

Venmo

Thursday kicks off calm and cold. Midday wind swings easterly at 17-20 at Iwash (Rooster) Rock, Stevenson, and Home Valley with 14-17 at Viento. You’ll get a few hours of this. Iwash holds out longest with 17-20 into mid-afternoon. High temp: 57F.

Extended: Saturday and Sunday both look calm and wet. There’s some hint in the models of a strong front swinging through late Sunday or sometime Monday. Models also hint at high pressure building offshore behind that system. If this comes to pass, there’s the potential for a very windy period somewhere in that time frame. But as I mentioned earlier, only 20% of the ensembles are on board with this yet. If you haven’t yet sent in your ballot, vote for the windy scenario on Monday. Have a great day!
