Mt. Hood Snow Forecast
It was much windier than expected on Mt. Hood yesterday, and that didn’t help the snow accumulation like it usually does. As I was writing this forecast, about an inch had fallen with 0.15” water equivalent (WE) in it. If I remember correctly, we’re expecting another inch or two or maybe three with the wind’s help overnight. We’ll keep the wind, and the snow level will fall to 3000′ A little snow early Monday gives way to dry weather Tuesday and then (probably) significant snowfall Wednesday – models have a lot of range for the Wednesday-Thursday time period, but the mean is around 1.0” WE to 1.25” WE. The uncertainty continues later in the week, but generally speaking, things look cold enough for snow through the week.
So. let’s call it 1-3” Sunday night. Light snowfall Monday morning decreases. By afternoon, we’ll have clear sky about 5500′ with clouds below. The snow level will be 3000′ into Monday morning, 2500′ in the afternoon, and 1500-2000′ overnight. About 0.1” to 0.2” WE is forecast Monday daytime for 1-3”. it’ll be windy: NW 35-45 early, W 15-20 in the afternoon, and light easterly overnight.
Tuesday will be sunny all day and high overcast overnight. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 1500′ in the morning, 2500′ in the afternoon, and, hmm…. hard to say overnight. Got some cold air coming in (maybe) from the east. Wind Tuesday: light and variable becoming SW 5-15 overnight. Models are pretty sure we’ll see snow, and a good bit of it, on Wednesday into Thursday. As of right now, they’re calling for 1.0” to 1.25” WE. Through the end of the week, the 25th percentile for snowfall is 7.4”, the 50th percentile is 11.6”, and the 90th percentile is 24.9”. Vote for that one. Enjoy the snow!

Gorge Wind Forecast
Hi friends! Models have backed off on the westerlies for Monday after having been pretty optimistic in last night’s run. We then have a light day Tuesday and stronger easterlies plus rain (or snow) on Wednesday. For Monday, we start with 11-14 from Stevenson to Swell with 7-11 from hood River to Doug’s with 14-17 east to Boardman. Models hint at areas east of The Dalles rising to 20-23. West of The Dalles, the wind drops to 7-10 in the afternoon. Drizzle extends to hood River through noon. River flow Sunday was 98-125kcfs, river temp is 39.92F, and high temp forecast is 48F. Tuesday starts with E 15 at Stevenson and Iwash (Rooster). Afternoon wind drops to 10 at Stevenson and turns light/variable at iwash. High temp: 49F. Wednesday starts with E 25 at Stevenson and Rooster. The wind picks up to 40ish at Iwash and 30-35 at Stevenson with 10-15 from Hood River eastward. However, it’s either going to be snowing or raining, and the morning low will be around 30F. Models hang on to easterlies through Friday, at least.

On Fridays at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class at Yoga Samadhi. On Saturday at 9am, there’s a by-donation outdoor group fitness on the 2rd floor deck about Ferment Brewing.
Cycling
Regarding the trails in general: don’t ride in the mud. You’ll damage the trails. Don’t ride trails if it was below freezing the previous night and is above freezing when you want to ride. Ride gravel. Ride your trainer. Build trails. There are trail builders seeking extra hands on seven additional miles of trail on Whoopdee. Contact HRATS for more information. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast
Gosh was Saturday a nice one on the mountain. Excellent hardpack conditions. Given that temps climbed above freezing today, it’s likely to be somewhat harder hardpack tomorrow… working its way to granular, but almost certainty not there yet. We’ll also pick up a bit of new snow over the next 36 hours. That’s followed by sunshine again on Monday and Tuesday and then… well, it’s rather unclear. There’s an unusually high spread in both 850mb (~5000′) temps and precip. This is thanks to a chunk of the ensembles calling for ridging (warmer and drier) and a chunk calling for troughing (cooler and wetter). In other words, any forecast beyond Tuesday or Wednesday is just making guesses. For now. Over the next week or so, models call for anywhere from 2.3” (10th percentile) to 19” (90th percentile) of new snow on Mt. Hood. Meh. Too much range!
But we don’t have to do much guessing about Sunday. We start mostly cloudy and add some flurries. Although… the cloud layer won’t be very deep, and occasionally this can result in freezing rain rather than snow. Just something to keep a watch on. The snow level will be around 5000′ in the morning, 4000′ in the afternoon, and 3500′ after midnight. About 0.1” water equivalent is forecast during the day for up to an inch of wet snow. Another 0.15” WE is forecast in the afternoon for another 1-2” of rather dense snow. Wind will be SW 10-20 in the morning, WSW 30-35 in the afternoon, and W 30 after midnight.
Monday starts snowy and clears during the day. The snow level will be 3500′ prior to sunrise and will drop to 2500′ or so during the day. Overnight, under clear sky, the free air freezing level (FAF) falls to 2000′ with 850mb temps at -2C. About 0.2” WE is forecast before the clearing. Call that 2-3” new snow thanks to orographic assistance. Wind: W 30 early, WNW 25 around sunrise. NW 20-30 in the afternoon, and E 10 after midnight. We’re looking at a dry day on Tuesday with temps on the slopes in the upper 20’s and variable wind to 10mph. After Tuesday? Hard to say. We’ll have to see if the ensembles settle down over the next couple of days. Until then… enjoy the slopes!

Gorge Wind Forecast
Hi friends! Looks like we might have a shot at west wind on Monday as a system swings through. In the meantime… Sunday starts with E 15-20 at Iwash (Rooster) Rock and 15 at Stevenson. Afternoon wind turns to west 5-10 at Iwash and E 10 at Stevenson. Expect light drizzle all day after 10. River flow Saturday was 82-138kcfs, river temp is 39.74F, and high temp forecast is 46F. A weak low swings inland through Washington on Monday, and that turns the wind onshore. Models are not quite sure how strong it will be. For now, let’s say that Stevenson to Doug’s has the potential for 15-18, and Mosier to Boardman has the potential for 23-26. Timing: after 10am for the strongest wind. High temp: 47F with partly cloudy sky in the west and mostly sunny sky out east. Tuesday starts with E 20-25 at Iwash and E 15-20 at Stevenson. Afternoon wind holds at 20ish at Iwash and Stevenson and picks up to E 10 or so from Hood River eastward. High temp: 48F with sunshine after a partly Nothing start. After Tuesday, there’s too much uncertainty in the models to make a forecast.
