Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Good morning,

Today and tomorrow are the last two days of the Mt. Hood Meadows ski season, so if you want to ski, head to the mountain this weekend. I’d say the best snow will be this morning, with a little cloud cover giving packed powder conditions on the groom. Once the sun comes out, the snow will suffer, so get up there early. That said, Meadows had 12” of new snow in the last 72 hours, and it’s been cold up there, so it could be really good this morning!

A morning on the mountain will put you in a great place to watch the Oregon Trail Rally near Middle Mountain today. Check out the spectators’ guide at OregonTrailRally.com. Give an extra holler to Dave Henderson, our local boy in the Super Production class, and to my friend Al driving the orange ’70-something Volvo. If you can’t watch the rally today, it continues tomorrow over by Dufur. According to the Dick Hannah Subaru guys, the unofficial party is after the rally’s over at the Shilo Inn at The Dalles. The rally people I met the other day seemed really cool, so this could be a super fun party. With ski season over and no more 4:30 wakeups after tomorrow, I might actually make this party!

Also today, the Dog River Enduro mountain bike race on the Dog River Trail. Besides racing, that means that the 44 Road is driveable to the Dog River trailhead. In moto news today, Rick Higgins and the CGORA crowd ride 30-40 miles out of the Pine Mont Staging area, starting at 10am. Speaking of Rick Higgins and the CGORA crowd, we have a Girls Who Love Dirt work party on Tuesday morning. If you’re a girl and want to come, sign up here: http://doodle.com/mi6mdyyqdn8k66gh

The wind forecast for today gives us 17-21 from The Dalles to Maryhill, filling back to Hood River at 22-25 this afternoon. Tomorrow brings east wind at Stevenson and Rooster and light wind near Hood River. Monday looks light. The long term forecast has been holding steady in predicting a big, big Corridor day on Wednesday. You know how these long range forecasts are: temperamental (like me), but I’m clearing my Wednesday, just in case.

Have an awesome day today!
