Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

It’s a mostly clear Christmas morning on the mountain, and the day will stay sunny. Sunshine Tuesday transitions to snowfall on Wednesday followed by a return to dry weather with scattered flurries for the next few days. Next chance of significant precipitation after Wednesday appears to be next Sunday.

For Christmas Tuesday, expect sunshine with clouds overnight. Free air freezing level 500′-1000′ all day, dropping to 0′ overnight near Mt. Hood. Wind will be N 10 early, NW 15 in the afternoon, and W 15 overnight.

Wednesday brings light to moderate snowfall, depending on how much orographic assistance we get. The snow level will be 0′ near Mt. Hood early, rising to 1500′ in the afternoon. Precip totals: 0.2” water value (WV) during the day, for 2-3” of relatively dry snow. Another 0.3”-0.5” WV falls overnight, for 4-6” of powder. Wind will be W 15 early, WNW 30 in the afternoon, and NW 20 after midnight.

Thursday looks partly cloudy with flurries early and clear in the afternoon. More clouds move in overnight. Snow level: 1000′ during the day, 0′ overnight near Mt. Hood. Just a trace of snow will fall in the 24 hour period, and that will happen during the early morning hours. Wind: NW 20 in the morning, N 20 in the afternoon and overnight. Precip stays to the north of the Columbia River on Friday, leaving Mt. Hood dry and partly cloudy.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s mostly clear and very quiet this morning. We should have sunshine all day before clouds move in overnight. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and low 40’s later. Light and variable wind. No rainbows. Wednesday starts out cloudy. Models disagree on the precip type, but I think we’ll see wet snow down to river level starting around 10am and turning to rain after a couple of hours. Temps will be in the low 30’s early and low 40’s later. Light east wind early, light west wind later. 98% chance of rainbows. Thursday looks partly cloudy and then clear with just a few scattered sprinkles early. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and low 40’s later. Light west wind. 7% chance of morning rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

Stay off the trails – it’s too muddy. Even if you have a fat bike. You’re damaging delicate dirt and undoing the hard work of many, many volunteers. Syncline is freeze-thaw, and therefore extremely delicate, above the fence. Please don’t ride it or you’ll do major trail damage. The Power Station has a really wonderful virtual bike setup. I know it’s not the same, but it’s better than damaging the dirt.

Upcoming Events

It’s Tuesday, Christmas Day, and I’m guessing most of our regular Tuesday events are canceled. I know that Monk Meditation at Samadhi has been canceled tonight. For Wednesday, there’s free yoga at the FISH food bank in Hood River at 10am.
