Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Mt. Hood Forecast

Merry Christmas and happy holidays to all of you! The general picture for Mt. Hood is a couple days of snow, a couple days of dry, colder weather, and then a return to various forms of precipitation during the middle of next week. For Christmas Day, the mountain will be snowy, but don’t rule out a period of mixed precipitation. The snow level will be 5000′ (850mb temps 0-1C) during the day, 4500′ in the evening, and 3000′ overnight. About 0.8” water equivalent (WE) is forecast during the day, for 5-7” of heavy sow. Another 0.3” falls overnight, for 3” of lighter snow. Wind: SW 10-25 early, SW 20-45 midday and evening, and W 45 after midnight.

Orographic snowfall (terrain-enhanced) continues Saturday daytime with the intensity increasing in the afternoon. The snow level will be 3000′ in the morning, 1500-2000′ in the afternoon, and 1500′ overnight. About 0.5” WE falls during the day, for 5-6” of nice, fluffy snow. Another trace falls overnight. Wind: W 45 early, W 40 in the afternoon, and light SW after midnight.

Sunday looks dry, sunny, and cool. The freezing level will be 1500′ early and will fall to 0′ later. Light SW wind in the morning, SE 15-20 in the afternoon, and E 15-25 overnight. Monday: clear, cold, and sunny. Wind: E 15 in the morning, NE 10 in the afternoon. Precipitation returns late Tuesday or Wednesday, possibly as mixed precip and then switching to snow. Keep an eye on the Gorge during that time period as well!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Cycling

Volunteers needed! Columbia Area Mountain Bike Advocate (CAMBA) is doing small projects at the Syncline this winter: treadwork and trail maintenance. Show that we care and want to protect it! Due to COVID restrictions, work party numbers are limited, so if you can help, contact Ann 509-637-three seven one three. Hikers, runners, mountain bikers, and sightseers all welcome! Do be aware of the possibility of freeze-thaw (muddy) conditions, especially on trails that are not under a tree canopy. Do not ride if it was below freezing last night and is above freezing when you want to ride. The soil structure will be liquefied, and you will do permanent damage to trails. Consider riding gravel roads instead.
