Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge Wind Forecast

If you did a bit of driving on Suturday, you found a bit of wind. Heck, you may even have found enough wind among the raindrops and rainbows in the central Gorge. Today’s (Sunday) an interesting day as high pressure offshore combines with a south-moving trough of low pressure and atmospheric instability due to cold air aloft (the snow level is about 6000′).

So, we’ll see 8-12ish through the whole Gorge this morning. In the afternoon, as the offshore high strengthens, the wind will pick up. If the atmosphere stays relatively stable, we’ll have 23-26 between Viento and The Dalles with 13-16 near Cascade Locks. Although models don’t see to think the Rufus stretch will be windy, given the morning gradients, I also think it’s likely to see 23-26 this afternoon. All that said, if it gets clouds and starts raining, then all bets are off!

Looking at Monday, the trough of low pressure that’s been causing the clouds and rain moves off to the south. We’ll have high pressure offshore and building high pressure in the desert. This isn’t a situation that the models handle well. The GFS is suggesting very light westerlies early and light easterlies at the end of the day. Usually I’d still with west wind for this scenario, but this time, given the widespread nature of the easterly flow, I’m going with light westerlies early and east wind at 5-10 in the afternoon.

Tuesday and Wednesday are more clear-cut. The east wind picks up to 25-30 at Rooster Rock and Stevenson for much of the day on Tuesday, not fading until mid-afternoon. Even then, we’ll have at least 15-20 on through Wednesday morning. The wind on Wednesday will be easterly at 20-25 for the first half of the day, fading in the afternoon.

Random Morning Thoughts

When we make plans, we often have a set idea of how things are going to work out. In creating this story, we miss out on a lot of good stuff! For example, I like to hunt mushrooms. When I leave home, I have an expectation that I will find mushrooms. If the mushrooms do not cooperate (as they often do not), annoyance, frustration, and irritation arise.

Those feelings can ruin a perfectly nice walk in the woods! If I stop for a moment, there are so many other amazing things in the woods: peace, quiet, green, red, yellow, the smell of dirt, wild animal poop, the crunch of cracking branches, and, most of all, the woods. Most people on this planet don’t have easy access to the forest. I feel so lucky that I do!

When you make plans, what outcome are you expecting? See if you can hold that outcome a little less tightly and allow yourself to notice all the other goodies that are present. You might just find an awesome gem you weren’t expecting. Have an awesome day!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 27 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Weather Forecast

Sunday morning is starting out partly cloudy. We’ll see increasing clouds and a chance of showers this afternoon as the atmosphere destabilizes. Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and low 60’s later. Moderate west wind. 94% chance of rainbows (yesterday ended up being 100%!). Monday looks sunnier. Temps will be in the mid 40’s (brrrr) early and the mid 60’s in the afternoon. Light wind. No rainbows. Tuesday also looks sunny. Temps will be in the low 40’s early (brrr) and mid 60’s in the afternoon (nice!). East wind. No rainbows. We’re shooting for 70 degrees on Wednesday.

White Sprinter Van of the Week

Road and Mountain Biking

Nothing new to report: still quite a few trails closed in Post Canyon. Whoopdee is currently dry hardpack. Hospital is good. I imagine the 44 Road is good. Looks like a dry week ahead, so everything that is open should remain snow-free this week. I haven’t heard anything about the condition of Gunsight Ridge – not sure how much snow is up there. Enjoy the riding!

Upcoming Events

It’s still looking cold up in the mountains for the next few days, with the snow level around 5500′ today, 6000′ tomorrow, 4000′ Tuesday morning and 9000′ Tuesday afternoon. That means you’ll want to bundle up if you’re headed to Cooper Spur today for the Cross on the Mountain Cyclocross race.

Other things to do today include three free yoga classes – 9am at Samadhi, 4pm at Pure Yoga in The Dalles, and 6pm at Pure Yoga Hood River. There’s also pickup touch rugby today for both kids and adults – that happens at the Hood River Marina at 11.

Click here for the full events calendar.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. Be safe out there on the snow this summer!

Have an awesome day today!
