Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Friday morning is starting off with light westerlies, mostly in the 5-10 range, and light rain in the Portland area. A weak cold front is moving into the area today and will increase the west wind as the day goes on. The western Gorge, however, probably the Stevenson to Viento stretch, will be impacted by rain today. So, we’ll see the wind pick up to 13-16 between Cascade Locks and Viento before and after the front passes, with less wind while it’s raining. Areas from Mosier eastward will build to gusty 25-28 this afternoon.

The Swell to Mosier area is questionable today, as it’ll probably be where the cloud line ends up. If we see sunshine after the frontal passage today (look for the clouds to break up to know when the front is passing), the Hood River area will have those mid 20’s west winds. If not, you’ll be driving to chase the stronger westerlies.

A trough of low pressure sits over the Northwest on Saturday and Sunday. Fortunately for windsports enthusiasts, there will be accompanying high pressure. This sets us up for good-enough westerlies east of the low cloud line. On Saturday that will most likely mean west wind at 12-15 everywhere to start the day. In the afternoon, the wind will build to 23-26 east of the low clouds, probably from Swell eastward to Arlington. The Rowena-Doug’s stretch may see slightly stronger westerlies mid-afternoon.

Sunday looks very similar to Saturday in terms of wind strength, if not locations: low pressure sits over the PNW and high pressure sits over the Pacific. Morning wind will likely be in the 7-10 range pretty much everywhere, and afternoon wind will likely be 23-26 between Stevenson and The Dalles. Monday is questionable due to lack of agreement in the weather models, but even more questionable due to the fact that the GFS run hasn’t completed out that far this morning!

Random Morning Thoughts

I do actually have something on my mind this morning, but the thought isn’t complete, so I’m going to set it aside for now. It has something to do with cultural identity and appearance and culturally congruent behaviors. Anyway, maybe it’s just something for each of us to contemplate today: what is your cultural identity and your culturally-specific behaviors?

I’ll give you a hint if you’re White: you too have a culture – it’s just hard to see it because you feel so comfortable in it; it’s the culture that dominates most of your interactions, and that renders it invisible. If you’ve moved from one part of the country to another, or if you’ve transitioned between urban and rural areas, you may have felt the discomfort of having your culture be different than your new home’s. I feel this each time I go back and forth between Portland and Hood River. Just something to think about today! Have an awesome day!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 27 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Weather Forecast

I’m guessing it’s cloudy out there this morning ahead of an incoming cold front. We’ll see light rain in the western Gorge with sprinkles near Hood River. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and upper 60’s this afternoon. Light westerlies this morning become moderate this afternoon. 93% chance of rainbows. Saturday looks partly cloudy with sprinkles or light rain showers possible for short periods. Temps will be near 50 early and near 60 in the afternoon. Moderate west wind. 88% chance of rainbows. Sunday also looks partly cloudy with sprinkles possible. Temps will be near 50 early and near 60 in the afternoon. Moderate westerlies. 74% chance of rainbows.

White Sprinter Van of the Week

Road and Mountain Biking

According to the USFS website, the McClellan Meadows trail has reopened, meaning the Falls Creek shuttle is still an option. I didn’t call them, though, so I’m only reporting what I read. In Post Canyon, the following trails are currently closed to all users: Dirt Surfer (170/172), 160, 130, Borderline (133), Spaghetti Factory (116), and 197. Trails not closed are riding very, very nice. Trails are also riding nice on Hospital Hill. I haven’t tested Whoopdee and Ronnoc, but I bet they are both good too! One last thing – Post Canyon moto trails are now open for motorized use. Other County lands remain closed to moto.

Upcoming Events

The cooler weather this weekend will drop the snow level way down, so be aware if you have high elevation plans: the snow level will be around 6000′ on Saturday and 5500′ on Sunday. Due to this forecast, Mt. Hood Meadows has cancelled the beer and cider fest scheduled for Saturday.

Still on is this morning’s donut and coffee run at Kickstand Coffee at 7am – jog or walk 4 miles, and you get coffee and a donut on the house. That happens every week, so if you miss it today, you can get those calories next Friday. Sunday is a cyclocross race at Cooper Spur ski resort.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. Be safe out there on the snow this summer!

Have an awesome day today!
